Teaching Civil Engineering Students about Ergonomics

Ergonomic risk factors in the workplace can result in nonfatal injuries among construction workers, leading to absenteeism, project delays, and reduced organizational productivity. Previous studies have highlighted a lack of knowledge about ergonomics among construction practitioners, hindering effective strategies. This knowledge gap can be attributed to the limited recognition of ergonomics as essential in civil engineering education across educational institutions. Consequently, it is crucial to raise awareness and ensure that civil engineering students comprehend the significance of ergonomics within their field. This study focuses on developing and implementing two ergonomics modules for civil engineering students. Module #1 covers the introduction to ergonomics, while Module #2 explores understanding ergonomic risk factors. The researcher has identified specific topics for each module and created instructional content, including well-defined lesson objectives, key concepts, and engaging activities. These modules were integrated into the summer semester program at an affiliated institution of Anna University, targeting 30 undergraduate students who have been promoted from the third to the fourth year of their studies. A postassessment survey was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the modules. The survey results indicated that the modules successfully enhanced the student's understanding and knowledge acquisition in the field of ergonomics. This research highlights the importance of incorporating ergonomics education in civil engineering curricula to equip future professionals with the necessary skills to address ergonomic challenges and promote a safer and more productive construction industry.
