Building a Growth Mindset via Continuous Revision: A Case Study of a Basic Writing Classroom
Adrian J. Rivera
Journal of Response to Writing, v11 n2 Article 2 p46-62 2025
Continuous revision policies provide sizable benefits to students, though one previously unexplored avenue of research is how such policies can help students develop a growth mindset. For the purposes of this article, a "continuous revision policy" is one in which students can revise their work on a rolling basis up until a predetermined point in the semester, with multiple rounds of revision acceptable and encouraged. This article details the results of a semester-long study of a basic writing classroom wherein the objective was to determine how a continuous revision policy can help students develop a growth mindset. By taking the opportunity to revise their work on a continuous basis, these students were able to receive and implement instructor feedback on their work to both improve their grades and enhance their understanding of the writing process. In this way, students gained confidence in their writing and cultivated an outlook on their work more in line with the growth mindset, gaining a better understanding of writing as a skill that can be developed via practice and effort, rather than a natural talent that some students have.
