Hardiman, Pamela Thibodeau; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
Using 48 undergraduates, this study tested whether improving students' knowledge of balance rules through experience with a balance beam promotes understanding of the weighted mean. Subjects classified as nonbalancers performed significantly better on the transfer problems if they had been given balance training rather than assigned to the control…

Shukla, Shyam S.; Rusling, James F. – Analytical Chemistry, 1984
Discusses how computational errors arise in analysis of data and how they can be minimized. Shows that all computations are subject to roundoff/truncation errors and how such errors are propagated and influence the stability and condition of a reaction. Applications to procedures used in analytical chemistry are addressed. (JN)

Judd, Wallace – Arithmetic Teacher, 1976
A collection of seven calculator games is presented. The mathematical concepts involved, the object of the game, the number of players needed, the rules, and variations for different grade levels are listed for each of the games. (DT)

Schnur, James O.; Lang, Jerry W. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1976
A study of the effect of the use of calculators on student computational ability is reported. Results showed that treatment groups using calculators gained significantly more whole number computational ability than control groups not using calculators. Interaction between sex of student and calculator usage was not significant. (DT)

Shumway, Richard J. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1976
Arguments for and against the use of hand calculators in school mathematics are presented. (DT)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Electronic Equipment, Elementary School Mathematics
Fielker, David S. – Mathematics Teaching, 1976
Problems arising from using a calculator are discussed, and some mathematics activities involving calculators are suggested. (DT)

Walker, David A. – Association for Institutional Research (NJ1), 2004
This article looked at non-experimental data via an ordinary least squares (OLS) model and compared its results to ridge regression models in terms of cross-validation predictor weighting precision when using fixed and random predictor cases and small and large p/n ratio models. A majority of the time with two random predictor cases, ridge…

Michaelides, Michalis P. – National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST), 2006
Consistent behavior is a desirable characteristic that common items are expected to have when administered to different groups. Findings from the literature have established that items do not always behave in consistent ways; item indices and IRT item parameter estimates of the same items differ when obtained from different administrations.…

Gaulke, Scott – 1998
This paper investigates the effects of a computer algebra system (DERIVE) on students' comprehension and computational skills in Brief Calculus, a first course for non-mathematics majors. Research results indicate better conceptual understanding by the group using DERIVE without the loss of pen-and-paper computational ability. (KHR)

Yeo, Dorian – 2003
This book explores how primary school children with dyslexia or dyspraxia and difficulty in math can learn math and provides practical support and detailed teaching suggestions. It considers cognitive features that underlie difficulty with mathematics generally or with specific aspects of mathematics. It outlines the ways in which children usually…

Williams, Lynda Patterson – 2000
The purpose of the study was to compare two methods of learning multiplication facts in order to develop speed and accuracy. The researcher conducted the action research project with a seventh grade enrichment class, which met for seven weeks during the school year. As part of the curriculum students were provided with activities to refine their…

Roark, Marvin Brent – 1998
This study attempted to show that students that are classified as visual learners will score higher on standardized tests than those students that are classified as non-visual learners because visual learners possess the traits needed to do well on standardized tests. The study used (33) visual and (33) non-visual adult learners in the adult basic…

Hutton, B. Meriel – 1997
For the safety of the public, it is essential that nurses are competent at least in the mathematics that enables them to calculate medications accurately. From a survey by G. Hek (1994), it is apparent that mathematics is not universally included in the nursing curricula, nor asked for as a pre-requisite to entry. Changes in the profile of the…

Wu, Shiying; Levy, Paul S.; Wang, Jiantong; Chromy, James; Li, Lei – National Center for Education Statistics, 2003
The objectives of this project were to construct two sets of balanced repeated replication (BRR) weights for two National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88) sets of weights: one based on the third follow-up survey done in 1994 (NELS88:94); and the second based on the fourth follow-up survey done in 2000 (NELS88:2000). These weights are…
