Peer reviewedField, John; And Others – Higher Education Review, 1992
Three British journals were used to evaluate citation counting as a means of evaluating research quality in two applied knowledge fields, continuous education and management education. The study concluded that citation analysis can provide evidence about the status of a knowledge field but cannot be used as a measure of the quality of research.…

Peer reviewedPeritz, B. C. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992
Examines difficulties with citation analysis as it is used to study citation frequency, usually for the evaluation of scientists, publications, or institutions. Topics addressed include selection of a control set of papers, comparisons of different types of papers (e.g., methodological or theoretical), effects of independent variables, and use of…

Peer reviewedMartin, F. Douglas – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992
This study examined the science-profession dyad of ichthyology and fisheries biology through citation analysis of the journal literature. It found that the fields overlap in the journals cited, and, although differences in citation behavior were identified, some exchange of information within the dyad was indicated. (38 references) (Author/MES)
Descriptors: Citation Analysis, Fisheries, Ichthyology, Information Utilization
Peer reviewedKochan, Carol Ann; Budd, John M. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992
Discusses the problem of fraud in scientific research and provides background on the medical research fraud case of John Darsee in 1981. Results of analysis of citations to Darsee's publications are reported, indicating that his work continues to be cited positively; and the dangers of fraudulent research are considered. (28 references) (MES)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Citation Analysis, Citations (References), Fraud
Peer reviewedSlater, Robert Bruce – Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, 1994
A tentative effort is made to use citation analysis to evaluate productivity of science departments at black universities and to compare them with other black universities and white universities. Caution is urged in interpreting citation analysis results, but they do seem to indicate a widening gap between white schools and black schools. (SLD)
Descriptors: Achievement, Black Colleges, Citation Analysis, Evaluation Methods
Peer reviewedSchoepflin, Urs; Muller-Brettel, Marianne – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1990
Discusses a bibliometric analysis of the first 12 volumes of the International Journal of Behavioral Development (IJBD) that used data from PSYCINFO and Social Scisearch. The IJBD is compared to other journals in the field. Changes in IJBD's focus, and the internationality of its authorship and reception, are discussed. (GH)
Descriptors: Bibliographic Coupling, Bibliometrics, Citation Analysis, Citation Indexes
Peer reviewedReinsch, N. L., Jr.; Lewis, Phillip V. – Journal of Business Communication, 1993
Reports citation patterns for "The Journal of Business Communication" for the years 1978 to 1992. Investigates authorship trends, trends in intellectual content, and trends in the relationship between the journal and other journals. (SR)
Descriptors: Authors, Business Communication, Citation Analysis, Citations (References)
Peer reviewedWagner-Dobler, Roland – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1997
In the history of science, there have often been periods of sudden rapprochements between pure science and technology-oriented branches of science. Mathematical logic as pure science and computer science as technology-oriented science have experienced such a rapprochement, which is studied in this article in a bibliometric manner. (Author)
Descriptors: Bibliometrics, Citation Analysis, Citations (References), Computer Science
Peer reviewedWhite, Howard D.; McCain, Katherine W. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
Presents an extensive domain analysis of information science in terms of its authors. Names of those most frequently cited in 12 key journals from 1972 through 1995 were retrieved from Social Scisearch via DIALOG. The top 120 were submitted to author co-citation analyses, yielding automatic classifications relevant to histories of the field.…

Peer reviewedSzava-Kovats, Endre – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
In addition to "formal" reference citations in scientific journals, articles also contain further references. The main findings of an examination of non-indexed indirect-collective citedness (NIICC) are presented; two representative, elite physics journals were examined. Further research is needed to reveal the life course and nature of the ICC…

Peer reviewedBraun, Tibor – Journal of Information Science, 1998
Analysis of the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) database determined the growth of frequency of use of the term globalization during 1989-1995. Lists globalized items during 1989-1995: business, industry, production, and technology. Notes that science has not become globalized because it is still supported and managed by national governments.…

Peer reviewedFrohlich, Cliff; Resler, Lynn – Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2001
Performs an analysis of all 1128 publications produced by scientists during their employment at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, thus assessing research performance using as bibliometric indicators such statistics as publications per year, citations per paper, and cited half-lives. Evaluates five different methods for determining…

Peer reviewedCoulter, Neal; Monarch, Ira; Konda, Suresh – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
This empirical research demonstrates the effectiveness of content analysis to map the research literature of the software engineering discipline. Co-word analysis, which is related to cocitation analysis, is used to identify associations among indexing terms from the AMC (Association for Computing Machinery) Computing Classification System and to…

Peer reviewedNoyons, E. C. M; Moed, H. F.; Luwel, M. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1999
Presents the results of a combined performance/mapping study used to evaluate a Belgian research institute in microelectronics. Results from one bibliometric approach were used to validate results of another. Findings indicated that the method provides a detailed and useful picture of the position of the institute from an international…

Peer reviewedYuan, Weijing; Meadow, Charles T. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1999
Reports on an exploratory study of the measurement of commonality in the use of variables or measures by authors and groups of authors who have reported on studies of information retrieval system users. There is some similarity to cocitation analysis: when two individual papers or two authors over several works, use the same variables, this…
