Peer reviewedHorowitz, Alan B.; Horowitz, Valerie A. – Developmental Psychology, 1976
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Grade 2, Grade 5, Kindergarten Children
Peer reviewedLindauer, Barbara K.; Paris, Scott G. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
Developmental changes in memory organization based on synonym and antonym relationships were examined in three experiments. Subjects were 64 second graders and 64 sixth graders. Some inadequacies of a false recognition paradigm for developmental research are identified and some alternative analyses are proposed. (Author/JH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Developmental Stages
Peer reviewedBegg, Ian; Anderson, M. Christine – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
Children, ages 7-8 and 11-12, were asked to represent pairs of nouns in memory as a single interactive image, as two separate images, or by a control procedure; and then were tested either by cued or noncued recall. Results were interpreted as supporting an imagery-organization hypothesis. (Author/SB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cues, Elementary Education, Grade 2
Peer reviewedWestman, Alida S.; Youssef, Zakhour I. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1976
Seventy kindergarten children learned to order 12 objects that were well known and either unrelated or categorizable into well-known categories. Free recall was assessed. Results indicated the children used category membership both to learn and to recall the items. (Author/SB)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Early Childhood Education, Kindergarten Children, Memorization
Din, Feng S.; Barnes, Kahlon – 2001
This study investigated whether students' memory retention rate improved when they were provided with blue ink printed material. A pretest, treatment, posttest with control group design was used. The participants were 93 10th and 11th grade students in algebra and geometry courses, and there were 2 classes in each course. The treatment lasted for…

Simpson, Jeff – 1998
This paper proposes that there are some students who understand mathematics but just can't remember the rules to use it, and others who have accurate rote memory but can't apply the facts they know or do not understand the concepts behind them. The guided discovery approach to teaching mathematics is introduced. This approach promotes a system of…
Descriptors: Adult Education, Division, Learning Strategies, Mathematics Activities
Sousa, David A. – 2001
This book presents information to help teachers turn research on brain function into practical classroom activities and lessons, offering: brain facts; information on how the brain processes information; tips on maximizing retention; an information processing model that reflects new terminology regarding the memory systems; new research on how the…

Mandler, George; Worden, Patricia E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
The present experiment was designed to provide another experimental analogue of semantic processing without storage available for later retrieval. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Memory, Recall (Psychology), Semantics
Peer reviewedWeber, Robert E. – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1973
Author outlines some of the basic techniques of futurology and suggests a possible course of action in getting our futurology effort underway. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Children, Futures (of Society), Memory, Methods
Peer reviewedKosslyn, Stephen M.; Bower, Gordon H. – Child Development, 1974
This experiment tested whether children rely (relatively more than adults) on sensory imagery as the internal representation of sentences in memory. Age differences were found. (ST)
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Figurative Language, Imagery
Goedel, George D. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
Encoding processes were investigated using the release from proactive inhibition (PI) paradigm with word triades derived from the factorial Manipulation of evaluative connotation (E) and concreteness (C). (Editor)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Inhibition, Memory, Recall (Psychology)
Burwitz, L. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
In the present study, a single -trial learn-recall design was employed to eliminate the possibility of interference and to provide a clean test of the trace decay theory, which predicts forgetting under impoverished feedback and interpolated noninterfering activity because of covert-rehersal restrictions. (Author)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Feedback, Memory, Psychological Studies
Lassen, Gary L.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1974
An experiment was conducted comparing judgment of recency (JOR) for line drawings and printed words representing common objects. In a mixed design, groups of 15 Ss were tested using either pictures or words at either of two presentation rates. (Editor)
Descriptors: Memory, Methods, Pictorial Stimuli, Psychological Studies
Herrmann, Douglas J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1973
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Classification, Cognitive Processes, Language Research
Peer reviewedMills, John A. – Journal of Psychology, 1973
Confirms studies which have shown that rehearsal enhances recall if appropriate cues are related to the materials. (RB)
Descriptors: College Students, Educational Research, Learning Processes, Memory
