Windfuhr, Kirsten; While, David; Hunt, Isabelle; Turnbull, Pauline; Lowe, Rebecca; Burns, Jimmy; Swinson, Nicola; Shaw, Jenny; Appleby, Louis; Kapur, Navneet – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2008
Background: Suicide is a leading cause of death among youths. Comparatively few studies have studied recent trends over time, or examined rates and characteristics of service contact in well-defined national samples. Methods: Data on general population suicides and mid-year population estimates were used to calculate suicide rates (per…

Danielson, Christopher; Jenson, Eric – Mathematics Teacher, 2008
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving presents a challenge to teachers in many U.S. schools. Some students are absent because they are traveling to be with their extended families for the holiday. Other students, assuming that nothing important will happen at school when so many of their peers are absent, may also be absent. One school's solution to…

Brucker, Elizabeth L. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2008
A standards-based approach to mathematics involves using story problems to allow students to investigate a solution. This approach emphasizes an understanding of concepts and processes and assumes mastery of basic computation skills. This article will encourage teachers to continue teaching standards-based mathematics and to take advantage of…

Blank, Rebecca M. – Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, 2008
This paper discusses the reasons why the current official U.S. poverty measure is outdated and nonresponsive to many anti-poverty initiatives. A variety of efforts to update and improve the statistic have failed, for political, technical, and institutional reasons. Meanwhile, the European Union is taking a very different approach to poverty…

Gilmore, Camilla K.; Spelke, Elizabeth S. – Cognition, 2008
In learning mathematics, children must master fundamental logical relationships, including the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. At the start of elementary school, children lack generalized understanding of this relationship in the context of exact arithmetic problems: they fail to judge, for example, that 12 + 9 - 9 yields…

Loveless, Douglas J., Ed.; Griffith, Bryant, Ed.; Bérci, Margaret E., Ed.; Ortlieb, Evan, Ed.; Sullivan, Pamela, Ed. – IGI Global, 2014
While incorporating digital technologies into the classroom has offered new ways of teaching and learning into educational processes, it is essential to take a look at how the digital shift impacts teachers, school administration, and curriculum development. "Academic Knowledge Construction and Multimodal Curriculum Development" presents…

Howe, Harry; Simkin, Mark G. – Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, 2006
The extensive computational and formatting capabilities of today's spreadsheets enable users to create sophisticated analytical models with professionally formatted outputs. But good-looking reports can mask a host of input errors, formula mistakes, and computational problems. This article examines the subject of spreadsheet error detection in…

Laming, Donald – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2006
This article reports some calculations on free-recall data from B. Murdock and J. Metcalfe (1978), with vocal rehearsal during the presentation of a list. Given the sequence of vocalizations, with the stimuli inserted in their proper places, it is possible to predict the subsequent sequence of recalls--the predictions taking the form of a…

Langford, Eric – Journal of Statistics Education, 2006
The calculation of the upper and lower quartile values of a data set in an elementary statistics course is done in at least a dozen different ways, depending on the text or computer/calculator package being used (such as SAS, JMP, MINITAB, "Excel," and the TI-83 Plus). In this paper, we examine the various methods and offer a suggestion for a new…

de Oliveira, E. Capelas; Chiacchio, Ary O. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
The paper considers a class of real integrals performed by using a convenient integral in the complex plane. A complex integral containing a multi-valued function with two branch points is transformed into another integral containing a pole and a unique branch point. As a by-product we obtain a new class of integrals which can be calculated in a…

Halpern, Arthur M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2006
The application of computational methods to the isomerization of hydrogen isocyanide to hydrogen cyanide, HNC-HCN is described. The logical extension to the exercise is presented to the isomerization of the methyl-substituted compounds, methylisocyanide and methylcyanide, Ch[subscript 3]NC-CH[subscript3]CN.

National Dropout Prevention Center for Students with Disabilities, 2011
The National Dropout Prevention Center for Students with Disabilities (NDPC-SD) was assigned the task of compiling, analyzing, and summarizing the data for Indicator 2--Dropout--from the FFY 2009 Annual Performance Reports (APRs) and the revised State Performance Plans (SPPs), which were submitted to the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP)…

Peer reviewedHolmes, Emma E. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1975
Games for use in practicing rounding numbers and mental computation using tens and hundreds are described. The importance of estimation to computation is discussed. (SD)

Peer reviewedHope, John A.; Sherrill, James M. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1987
Four methods of solutions and 12 calculative strategies were found from introspective reports of 15 skilled and 15 unskilled students in grades 11 and 12 doing mental multiplication. Unskilled students used strategies more suited to written than mental computation, while skilled students used strategies based on number properties. (MNS)

Peer reviewedFielker, David S. – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1986
How children perceive doubling and halving numbers is discussed, with many examples. The use of calculators is integrated. The tendency to avoid division if other ways of solving a problem can be found was noted. (MNS)
