Hessen, David J. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2010
In this article, a general class of special Rasch models for dichotomous item scores is considered. Although Andersen's likelihood ratio test can be used to test whether a Rasch model fits to the data, the test does not differentiate between special Rasch models. Therefore, in this article, new likelihood ratio tests are proposed for testing…

Dence, Thomas; Dence, Joseph – College Mathematics Journal, 2010
The integral of 1/(1 + x[superscript 2]) is standard in elementary calculus, but the related integral 1/(1 + x[superscript 4]) rarely appears. In this article we examine the latter integral, computing its value by four different methods; several that involve standard elementary calculus techniques, and several involving complex integration.

McCartney, Mark – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications: An International Journal of the IMA, 2010
Two common examples of one-dimensional maps (the tent map and the logistic map) are generalized to cases where they have more than one control parameter. In the case of the tent map, this still allows the global Lyapunov exponent to be found analytically, and permits various properties of the resulting global Lyapunov exponents to be investigated…

Dana-Picard, Thierry – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2010
We compute in three different ways the same definite parametric integral. By-products are the derivation of a combinatorial identity and two integral presentations of Catalan numbers. One of them leads to a presentation using the [gamma] function.

Spivey, Michael Z. – College Mathematics Journal, 2010
This article discusses a triangle of numbers that are related to the derangement numbers. These numbers satisfy a Pascal-like recurrence relation with subtraction instead of addition. We describe how they relate to numbers studied by other authors and use them to generalize Euler's famous recurrence relation for the derangement numbers.

Fay, Temple H.; Joubert, Stephan V. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2010
In this article we examine 2 x 2 first-order systems of ordinary differential equations and show how to identify separatrices for phase plane portraits when the system has a saddle point critical value. We describe how to use a computer algebra system to generate trajectories from contour plots, when possible, and determine the equation of the…

Lin, Guan-Chyun; Wen, Zhonglin; Marsh, Herbert W.; Lin, Huey-Shyan – Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2010
The purpose of this investigation is to compare a new (double-mean-centering) strategy to estimating latent interactions in structural equation models with the (single) mean-centering strategy (Marsh, Wen, & Hau, 2004, 2006) and the orthogonalizing strategy (Little, Bovaird, & Widaman, 2006; Marsh et al., 2007). A key benefit of the…

Hsieh, Fushing; Ferrer, Emilio; Chen, Shu-Chun; Chow, Sy-Miin – Psychometrika, 2010
In this article we present an exploratory tool for extracting systematic patterns from multivariate data. The technique, hierarchical segmentation (HS), can be used to group multivariate time series into segments with similar discrete-state recurrence patterns and it is not restricted by the stationarity assumption. We use a simulation study to…

Romano, Jeanine L.; Kromrey, Jeffrey D.; Hibbard, Susan T. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2010
The purpose of this research is to examine eight of the different methods for computing confidence intervals around alpha that have been proposed to determine which of these, if any, is the most accurate and precise. Monte Carlo methods were used to simulate samples under known and controlled population conditions. In general, the differences in…

Wang, Xiaosong; Zhu, Ruzeng – European Journal of Physics, 2010
The history of Laplace's equations for spherical and cylindrical droplets and the concept of dividing surface in Gibbs' thermodynamic theory of capillary phenomena are briefly reviewed. The existing theories of surface tensions of cylindrical droplets are briefly reviewed too. For cylindrical droplets, a new method to calculate the radius and the…

Teodosiev, Teodosi; Nachev, Anatoli – Informatics in Education, 2012
This paper discusses some difficulties in teaching introductory courses to programming, paying particular attention to their mathematical nature. We consider some aspects, which have not been commented in detail in textbooks and often neglected by course outlines and schedules. Some of these are constructing complex conditions, exceeding array…

Bhattacharjee, Shayak – European Journal of Physics, 2012
The performance of a fan is usually estimated using hydrodynamical considerations. The calculations are long and involved and the results are expressed in terms of three affinity laws. In this paper we use kinetic theory to attack this problem. A hard sphere collision model is used, and subsequently a correction to account for the flow behaviour…

Deke, John; Dragoset, Lisa – Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., 2012
The regression discontinuity design (RDD) has the potential to yield findings with causal validity approaching that of the randomized controlled trial (RCT). However, Schochet (2008a) estimated that, on average, an RDD study of an education intervention would need to include three to four times as many schools or students as an RCT to produce…

Sims, Paul A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2012
A brief history of the development of the empirical equation that is used by prominent, Internet-based programs to estimate (or calculate) the extinction coefficients of proteins is presented. In addition, an overview of a series of related assignments designed to help students understand the origin of the empirical equation is provided. The…

Bennett, Kevin J.; Probst, Janice C.; Vyavaharkar, Medha; Glover, Saundra H. – Journal of Rural Health, 2012
Purpose: We estimated the 30-day readmission rate of Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes, across levels of rurality. Methods: We merged the 2005 Medicare Chronic Conditions 5% sample data with the 2007 Area Resource File. The study population was delimited to those with diabetes and at least 1 hospitalization in the year. Unadjusted readmission…
