Peer reviewedHart, K.; And Others – Mathematics in School, 1982
The nature of cooperation between mathematics and science departments at the secondary school level is based on a survey of this issue. There was no situation found where there was a formal, continuing integration thoughout a school, but evidence of several types of cooperation was detailed. (MP)

Peer reviewedLeechford, Sandra; Rice, Dale R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The sample was a randomly selected sixth-grade class in a medium-sized southern city, and consisted of 33 students. The study was designed to answer four questions pertaining to the effect of calculators. Results indicated a calculator-based curriculum has a positive effect on student problem solving. (MP)

Peer reviewedHoltan, Boyd – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
It is felt that Aptitude-Treatment-Interaction (ATI) research is just scratching the surface as yet and does not have sufficient information to support a general theory. The current state of ATI research is documented, and seven conclusions made during a similar examination in 1975 are reviewed. (MP)

Krist, Betty J. – Viewpoints in Teaching and Learning, 1981
Examples are provided which demonstrate the use of the computer as an instructional aid for the algebra curriculum. While the basic content of an algebra course would remain intact, computer technology can enhance and expand methods of algebra instruction. (JN)
Descriptors: Algebra, Algorithms, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Oriented Programs
Peer reviewedJones, Peter L. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1982
Students in Papua, New Guinea were given a test in which the words more and less were used in different contexts. Half the pupils studied had English as their first language; for the other half English was a second language. Study results of pupil errors suggested serious educational implications. (MP)

Peer reviewedYvon, Bernard R.; Spooner, Eunice B. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1982
Seven workbook-oriented programs and one activity-oriented program were surveyed, and 106 different mathematics concepts were identified for kindergarten mathematics programs. Specific programs presented 31-58 of the concepts. Sixteen projects are described with uses that cover 87 concepts. They are suggested as supplements to any program. (MP)

Peer reviewedWardrop, Mary R., Ed.; Wardrop, Robert F., Ed. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1982
The bare minimum mathematical competencies for all college graduates are listed. It is felt too many people know too little mathematics, and ignorance is seen as a form of "functional illiteracy". The ideas presented were generated by a panel established by the Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics. (MP)

Peer reviewedLaing, Robert A.; Meyer, Ruth Ann – Arithmetic Teacher, 1982
A survey of general mathematics students whose teachers were taking an inservice workshop revealed that they had not yet mastered division. More direct introduction of the standard division algorithm is favored in elementary grades, with instruction of transitional processes curtailed. Weaknesses in transitional algorithms appear to outweigh…
