Huertas, J. A.; Ochaita, E. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1992
Forty blind children and adolescents had to learn two unknown environments and then externalize the spatial representation via two methods--building a scale model and verbally estimating distances. High correlations were found between the two methods and between those methods and two systems of measuring mobility. (Author/JDD)

Monaghan, James M.; Clement, John – International Journal of Science Education, 1999
Presents evidence for students' qualitative and quantitative difficulties with apparently simple one-dimensional relative-motion problems, students' spontaneous visualization of relative-motion problems, the visualizations facilitating solution of these problems, and students' memories of the online computer simulation used as a framework for…

Nordvik, Hilmar; Amponsah, Benjamin – Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, 1998
Investigated gender differences in the spatial abilities of mental rotation, spatial visualization, spatial perception, and relationships between spatial abilities and spatial activity participation in 161 Norwegian technology students and 293 social science students. Implications of results for occupational performance are discussed. (SLD)

Greenspan, Marlene – Early Child Development and Care, 1994
Briefly reviews the use of therapeutic touch in early Western culture and Judaic tradition and by modern practitioners. Discusses modern scientific approaches to therapeutic touch, including its use by nurses. Offers suggestions for and examples of the use of meditation, relaxation exercises, and therapeutic touch with adolescents in classroom and…

Matthews, Brian – Gender and Education, 1996
Investigates whether students' perceptions of scientists as being white, male, and dressed in laboratory coats is changing. Results from picture drawings made by 132 secondary school students indicate that the image pupils have of scientists is changing to show less gender bias and to be more realistic. (GR)

Efthimiadis, Efthimis – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 2000
Presents abstracts that discuss using data visualization for information retrieval and data mining, including immersive information space and spatial metaphors; spatial data using multi-dimensional matrices with maps; TREC (Text Retrieval Conference) experiments; users' information needs in cartographic information retrieval; and users' relevance…

Hurwitz, Charles L.; Abegg, Gerald – Journal of Education, 1999
Discusses the impact of computer technology on education, highlighting concept maps, electronic learning logs, and computer simulations, which provide students deeper understanding of chemistry and research methods while doing real science and help teachers conduct ongoing formative assessment of class progress. Computer simulations help teachers…

Healy, Lulu; Hoyles, Celia – Mathematical Thinking and Learning, 1999
Analyzes visual and symbolic strategies developed by students to express generalizations of number patterns and connections between them. Compares approaches adopted by students working through parallel task sequences which integrate different computer tools in different ways. Makes suggestions as to how students might be encouraged to exploit…

Cogliati, Joshua J.; Goosey, Frances W.; Grinder, Michael T.; Pascoe, Bradley A.; Ross, Rockford J.; Williams, Cheston J. – Journal on Educational Resources in Computing, 2005
Progress on a hypertextbook on the theory of computing is presented. The hypertextbook is a novel teaching and learning resource built around web technologies that incorporates text, sound, pictures, illustrations, slide shows, video clips, and--most importantly--active learning models of the key concepts of the theory of computing into an…

Cuello-Garcia; Carlos – Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions, 2005
Revealing or visualizing the thinking involved in making clinical decisions is a challenge. A case study is presented with a visual implement for sharing the diagnostic process. This technique adapts the Bayesian approach to the case presentation. Pretest probabilities and likelihood ratios are gathered to obtain post-test probabilities of every…

Stylianidou, Fani; Boohan, Richard; Ogborn, Jon – Science Education, 2005
This paper, from the UK group in the STTIS (Science Teacher Training in an Information Society) project, describes research into the nature of teachers' transformations of computer modeling, and the development of related teacher training materials. Eight teacher case studies help to identify factors that favor or hinder the take-up of innovative…

Jenvald, Johan; Morin, Magnus – Simulation & Gaming, 2004
The article presents an approach to emergency response training that combines simulation of hazardous environmental factors with extensive registration of the activities in a training scenario. Simulation enhances realism by exposing the trainees to representations of hazards without putting them at risk. Registration generates data that describe…

Sturm-Beiss, Rachel – Journal of Statistics Education, 2005
Analysis of variance (ANOVA), a technique included in many introductory statistics courses, analyzes the relationship between a quantitative dependent variable and one or more independent qualitative variables. The nature of the relationship is expressed in a model with unknown parameters. Many textbooks emphasize the mechanics of the technique…
