Peer reviewedBeishuizen, Jos; And Others – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1996
This discussion of hypertext focuses on a study of undergraduates that explored the conditions for making hypertext a better environment than a traditional linear text for studying and for an information search. Highlights include the influence of students' learning styles; and the availability of navigation tools. (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Computer Assisted Instruction, Educational Environment, Higher Education
Peer reviewedDias, Paulo; Sousa, Ana Paula – Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, 1997
A study of 22 high school students who used a prototype navigational map for browsing hypermedia documents found that the tool was not effective. Supporting previous research the study found the use of maps resulted in poorer performance, less use of the system, lower perceived control, and poorer development of mental representations. (PEN)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Educational Environment, Educational Media, High School Students
Peer reviewedWhitaker, Leslie A; Cuqlock-Knopp, Grayson – Scientific Journal of Orienteering, 1992
Twelve orienteers and four military scouts each described a critical incident requiring navigation skills in off-road terrain. Interview analysis generated a taxonomy of the navigator's cognitive model encompassing perception and use of environmental cues, problem-solving and decision-making strategies, and skill level. Contains 38 references. (SV)
Descriptors: Cognitive Mapping, Critical Incidents Method, Cues, Decision Making
Peer reviewedChanLin, Lih-Juan – International Journal of Instructional Media, 1999
Describes a study that investigated the effects of visual control (self-controlled versus system-controlled) and gender difference on learning with scientific multimedia instruction, observed how boys and girls differed in navigating and processing visual information in a hypermedia environment, and examined how visual control influenced learning.…
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Gender Issues, Hypermedia, Learning Processes
Peer reviewedRorvig, Mark; Hemmje, Matthias – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1999
Reports on a conference workshop that addressed Visual Information Retrieval Interfaces (VIRIs). Topics include evaluation methods; task dimension for evaluating VIRIs; efforts to fund European development of VIRIs; metrics, including cosine vector; navigation among documents; and interactions with users. (LRW)
Descriptors: Computer Interfaces, Evaluation Methods, Foreign Countries, Information Retrieval
Peer reviewedChou, Chien; Lin, Hua; Sun, Chuen-Tsai – International Journal of Instructional Media, 2000
Describes a study of college freshmen that investigated the effects of navigation maps on search performance, browsing behavior, and cognitive map development within hierarchical-structured hypertext courseware. Results of analysis of variance indicate that map type significantly affected search performance and browsing behavior. (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Cognitive Mapping, College Freshmen, Computer Assisted Instruction
Wikle, Thomas A. – International Journal of Environmental Education and Information, 2000
Students should have an understanding of basic Global Positioning System (GPS) principles as well as an awareness of how the technology will impact society in the future. Provides a brief overview of the evolution, principles, and applications of GPS together with suggested activities. (Contains 25 references.) (Author/WRM)
Descriptors: Environmental Education, Higher Education, Navigation, Research and Development
Peer reviewedNenninger, Garet G. – Physics Teacher, 2000
Examines the design and construction of a mini-sextant and its use in demonstrating Fresnel reflection, geometric optics, and several common optical techniques. A sidebar explains the basic use of the mini-sextant as a navigational tool. (WRM)
Descriptors: Demonstrations (Science), Higher Education, Instructional Materials, Light
Sinitsa, Katherine; Manako, Alla – Educational Technology, 1999
Discusses dictionaries in digital form and describes a new type of structured, interactive hyper-dictionary that connects user learning activities with corresponding queries that express information wishes. Topics include dictionaries as knowledge acquisition support tools; searching; browsing; self-assessment though knowledge representation; and…

Kolluri, Venkateswarlu; Metzler, Douglas P. – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1999
Explores the utility of using prior domain knowledge (in the form of taxonomies over attributes, attribute values and concept classes) to constrain the rule learner's search by requiring it to be consistent with what is already known about the domain. Spreading Activation Learning (SAL) is used to efficiently learn over taxonomically structured…

Peer reviewedCarroll, John M.; Rosson, Mary Beth; Isenhour, Philip L.; Van Metre, Christina; Schafer, Wendy A.; Ganoe, Craig H. – Internet Research, 2001
Explains MOOsburg, a community-oriented MOO that models the geography of the town of Blacksburg, Virginia and is designed to be used by local residents. Highlights include the software architecture; client-server communication; spatial database; user interface; interaction; map-based navigation; application development; and future plans. (LRW)

Nevile, Maurice – Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, 2005
For airline pilots, the call of "checklist complete" is officially prescribed talk to claim that the crew's joint conduct of a checklist is over, and the task can be understood as closed. However, very often this call is not the final talk for the task. This paper uses naturally occurring data, transcriptions of pilots interacting on actual…
