This article reviews some of the issues in the debate over bilingual instruction for Spanish speaking students. It presents statements by educators and foreign-born students and notes the impact of the immigrant parents' attitudes toward English on the child's use of it. (SJL)

A program was developed at Eastern Michigan University because a student wanted to develop a business French vocabulary and to achieve an employable speed in French shorthand. This article describes a model program called EXITO which was developed to help elderly Hispanics in Natalia, Texas, make use of health and social services that they had not previously taken advantage of because of low income, language and cultural differences, and geographic isolation. (EB)

Compared in this paper, by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, are the enrollment patterns of and degrees earned by Blacks, Hispanics, and women in Pennsylvania colleges. In a survey, undergraduate students of Spanish and Portuguese were asked to describe their professional goals and the function of language ability in these goals. Results show that cultural and humanistic goals of language study continue to be valued by undergraduates. The survey is described and implications discussed. (CHK)

When speaking to young children just acquiring language, parents employ certain appropriate language features. Parental speech in English and Spanish was analyzed for presence and distribution of these features. Differences were noted, yet there was a high degree of similarity across parents and languages for frequently occuring features. (CHK)
