Peer reviewedWalker, Clifford – Applied Linguistics, 1990
Examines the issue of giving English-language oral proficiency examinations in overseas English-medium universities as part of student evaluations. An oral test given at Jordan's Yarmouk University is reviewed showing an attempt to administer biannual, oral-communicative-proficiency tests to 1,000 students at a time. (24 references) (GLR)
Descriptors: Content Validity, English, Foreign Countries, Higher Education
Peer reviewedBarhoum, Khalil – Al-Arabiyya, 1989

Descriptors: Arabic, Comparative Analysis, Language Proficiency, Language Tests
Peer reviewedJohnson, Jacqueline S.; Newport, Elissa L. – Cognitive Psychology, 1989
To test whether the critical language learning period applies to second languages, the English proficiency was studied of 46 Asians varying in age at which they moved to America. Results on a grammaticality judgment task support the hypothesis; early arrivals were significantly superior to later arrivals in English proficiency. (TJH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Chinese Americans, Cognitive Development, Developmental Stages
Peer reviewedPratt, Anne C.; Brady, Susan – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1988
Two studies involving 30 third graders and 26 adults, respectively, assessed whether success at learning to read is related to awareness of phonological structure of spoken language. Differences in phonological awareness appeared to account for much of the variance between good and poor readers at both age levels. (TJH)
Descriptors: Adult Learning, Adult Students, Age Differences, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedWiddowson, H. G. – Applied Linguistics, 1989
Attempts to clarify the notion of language competence and draws on its relevance to language teaching practices. Language use competence may involve the adjustment of pre-assembled and memorized patterns and not so much the generation of expressions by direct reference to rules. (Author/CB)
Descriptors: Applied Linguistics, Communicative Competence (Languages), Language Patterns, Language Processing
Peer reviewedWeltens, Bert; Cohen, Andrew D. – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1989
Reviews key issues generally addressed in studies of language attrition, including the effects of instructional methods on long-term retention, the effects of proficiency level on attrition, attrition's different effects on various language skills, typical forgetting curves, and typical attrition orders. 26 references.(CB)
Descriptors: Bilingualism, Instructional Effectiveness, Language Proficiency, Language Research
Peer reviewedSeaton, Ian – Language Testing, 1987
Suggests that language testing should be more performance-based and realigned with a current and richer understanding of the language teaching and learning processes. This kind of testing has questionable validity until a wide range of variables are successfully defined and delimited. (CB)
Descriptors: English for Academic Purposes, Language Proficiency, Language Tests, Performance Tests

Peer reviewedSparks, Richard L. – Annals of Dyslexia, 1995
This paper proposes that foreign-language learning problems result from difficulties with native-language learning. Research evidence is summarized showing that good and poor foreign-language learners exhibit significantly different levels of native-language skill and phonological processing ability. Potential challenges to this hypothesis are…

Peer reviewedWaas, Margit – Language Problems and Language Planning, 1993
In a sociolinguistic study of nonpathological language loss, residents of German-speaking background who arrived in Australia between 1970 and 1981 were interviewed. Peer reviewedSasaki, Yoshinori – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1994

Descriptors: English, Foreign Countries, Japanese, Language Acquisition
Peer reviewedValette, Rebecca – Mosaic: A Journal for Language Teachers, 1994
Presents a five-step model for organizing instruction to focus on using the second language for real-life communication. The teacher's role is to ask for more precise effort from the students. (CK)

Peer reviewedElfenbein, Jill L.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1994
Forty children (ages 5-18) with mild to severe hearing losses were administered a battery of speech and language tasks. Misarticulation, syntactic, and pragmatic errors indicated a consistent pattern of oral communication behavior that reflects the reduction of acoustic input such children experience. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Articulation (Speech), Communication Skills, Deafness, Hearing Impairments
Peer reviewedMarcus, Gary F. – Second Language Research, 1995
Reviews the findings of the 3 research articles in this issue, focusing on Lardiere's claim that only 2 of the 15 Spanish-speakers in her study treated regular and irregular plurals differently. It is argued that Lardiere arrived at this classification arbitrarily. (five references) (MDM)
