An observational study of faculty-student interaction patterns was conducted in 24 male- and 21 female-instructor led classrooms at Vassar College. Although there was a clear tendency for male students to be more active than female students, factors other than sex of instructor may be of primary importance in explaining these effects. One explanation for male sexual aggression implicates certain adverse consequences of male gender socialization. Two studies tested the hypothesis that sexually aggressive men would be more gender stereotyped and would manifest lower capacities for empathy and intimacy.
