Licensing authorities in Sweden have approached the problem of unequal or inadequate education of immigrating foreign medical graduates by establishing a program which includes language and law courses and a clinical apprenticeship or a 3- to 5-month course preparatory to the standard graduate training of Swedish medical school graduates. The process of resident education in an internal medicine practice was examined through interviews with 14 residents, who discussed their educational experience while caring for ten patients. Scores based on the number of correct answers were compared with scores based on dangerous responses to items in the same multiple choice test developed by American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
