Reys, Barbara J.; Reys, Robert E. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1998
The amount and placement of instructional time devoted to various types of computation are crucial. Reviews messages regarding what and how computation should be developed in elementary school mathematics and offers a proposal for a K-8 computation curriculum. (ASK)

Egghe, Leo; Rousseau, Ronald; Van Hooydonk, Guido – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 2000
Discusses science evaluation studies that seek to determine quantitatively the contribution of different authors, departments, or countries to the whole system, and suggests that different scoring methods can yield totally different rankings. Presents formulas for counting procedures, nontrivial examples of anomalies, and possible solutions.…

Cawley, John; Parmar, Rene; Foley, Teresa E.; Salmon, Susan; Roy, Sharmila – Exceptional Children, 2001
A study investigated the arithmetic performance of 197 students (grades 3-8) with mild disabilities and 937 controls and data are discussed in terms of student achievement and implications for standards. The mathematics vocabulary of students with mild disabilities was less developed and they had lower performance scores on computation. (Contains…

Grobecker, Betsey; Lawrence, Frank – Learning Disability Quarterly, 2000
Twenty-seven children (ages 7-10) with learning disabilities and 42 controls were tested on three different mathematics tasks. Significantly more controls abstracted composite unit structures suggestive of operational logic on modified nonverbal and associativity of length tasks. On a flash card task, children with learning disabilities achieved…

Daugherty, Stefanie; Grisham-Brown, Jennifer; Hemmeter, Mary Louise – Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, 2001
In the current study, a constant time delay (CTD) procedure was embedded in classroom activities and routines to teach counting to three preschool children with speech and language delays. CTD was effective in teaching numbers to all three children. One child out of two also was able to acquire non-target information. (Contains references.) (CR)

Younger, Barbara A.; Hollich, George; Furrer, Stephanie D. – Infancy, 2004
From Aesop to Sun Tzu, the importance of working together has long been acknowledged. Yet as long as cooperation has existed, so have the difficulties associated with it. Pooling two fields might mean twice the power, but this union also brings twice the jargon, twice the competing theories, and twice the head butting. Nonetheless, in this…

Mitchell, Timothy J. F.; Chen, Sherry Y.; Macredie, Robert D. – Learning, Media & Technology, 2005
Web enjoyment has been regarded as a component of system experience. However, there has been little targeted research considering the role of web enjoyment alone in student learning using web-based systems. To address this gap, this study aims to examine the influence of web enjoyment on learning performance and perceptions by controlling system…

Ninness, Chris; Rumph, Robin; McCuller, Glen; Harrison, Carol; Ford, Angela M.; Ninness, Sharon K. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2005
Following a pretest, 11 participants who were naive with regard to various algebraic and trigonometric transformations received an introductory lecture regarding the fundamentals of the rectangular coordinate system. Following the lecture, they took part in a computer-interactive matching-to-sample procedure in which they received training on…

Bonotto, Cinzia – Mathematical Thinking & Learning: An International Journal, 2005
This article presents a teaching experiment on the relationship between informal out-of-school and formal in-school mathematics, and the ways each can inform the other in the development of abstract mathematical knowledge. This study concerns the understanding of some aspects of the multiplicative structure of decimal numbers. It involved a series…

Joram, Elana; Gabriele, Anthony J.; Bertheau, Myrna; Gelman, Rochel; Subrahmanyam, Kaveri – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2005
Mathematics educators frequently recommend that students use strategies for measurement estimation, such as the reference point or benchmark strategy; however, little is known about the effects of using this strategy on estimation accuracy or representations of standard measurement units. One reason for the paucity of research in this area is that…

Beretvas, S. Natasha – School Psychology Quarterly, 2005
This paper details the challenges encountered by authors summarizing evidence from a primary study to describe a treatment's effectiveness using an effect size (ES) estimate. Dilemmas that are encountered, including how to calculate and interpret the pertinent standardized mean difference ES for results from studies of various research designs,…

Crowe, Mary; Boston, Kellie – Science Activities: Classroom Projects and Curriculum Ideas, 2004
In this activity students examine burrow casts to learn about burrowing animals and practice their math skills. Students compute the volume and average circumference of a burrow. They also determine whether a relationship exists between burrow volume and the size of the organism that created it. Students use science as inquiry as they analyze and…

Huang, Guan-Hua; Bandeen-Roche, Karen – Psychometrika, 2004
In recent years, latent class models have proven useful for analyzing relationships between measured multiple indicators and covariates of interest. Such models summarize shared features of the multiple indicators as an underlying categorical variable, and the indicators' substantive associations with predictors are built directly and indirectly…

Ogasawara, Haruhiko – Psychometrika, 2004
Formulas for the asymptotic biases of the parameter estimates in structural equation models are provided in the case of the Wishart maximum likelihood estimation for normally and nonnormally distributed variables. When multivariate normality is satisfied, considerable simplification is obtained for the models of unstandardized variables. Formulas…
