Bestgen, Barbara J.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1980
This 12-week study examined attitudes and performance of 187 preservice elementary teachers on computational estimation and evaluated practice with and without instruction on specific mental estimation strategies. Analysis showed significant differences in estimation performance in favor of the groups receiving regular practice. (MK)

Lacksonen, James W. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1979
An approach to the teaching of steady-state recycle calculations is presented. Included are the solutions to two sample problems. (BB)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computation, Engineering Education
Bitter, Gary – Teacher, 1979
The author recommends allowing elementary students to use pocket calculators, so that they may concentrate on the sense of a math problem without getting bogged down in computation. He presents calculator activities on place value, estimation, and arithmetic operations, suitable for grades 1-6. (SJL)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Calculators, Computation, Elementary Education

Cain, Glen G. – Monthly Labor Review, 1979
The author argues that one answer to the criticism that the variation in demographic composition of the labor force leads to misinterpretations of unemployment statistics is to display the time series of unemployment rates for various demographic groups. (BM)

Antos, Joseph; And Others – Monthly Labor Review, 1979
The results of various attempts to quantify how much changes in the labor force, unemployment insurance, and minimum wages have affected unemployment rates are reasonably close; but no total effect on jobless rates can be determined. (BM)

And Others; Zakariya, Norma – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
An experimental program using the calculator in third, fourth, and fifth grades is described. Three example lessons are included, on (1) subtraction with regrouping, (2) estimation, and (3) number theory: Quadratics. (MK)

Maor, Eli – Mathematics Teacher, 1980
Examples given for uses for the calculator exchange key include: generation of the Fibonacci sequence and geometric series, determination of square roots, and the chief use of the function, which is to interchange the numerator and denominator of a fraction. (MK)

Ley, Terry C.; And Others – Journal of Reading, 1979
Describes a study of the relationship between performance on word problems and general reading ability, certain problem-solving reading and thinking skills, and computation skills. (DD)
Descriptors: Computation, Elementary Education, Grade 8, Problem Solving

Kuchemann, Dietmar – Mathematics in School, 1980
Samples of children in English secondary schools were given a test on integers, as part of the investigation into children's understanding of mathematics undertaken by the Concepts in Secondary Mathematics and Science (CSMS) project. This is a brief report of the performance of the third-year children. (Author/MK)

Selwyn, Jasper – Mathematics Teaching, 1980
Noitcarf numbers provide a simulation activity that allows teachers or education students to gain an understanding of the feelings of students who are taught mathematics by a "rules" method. They are actually an abstract presentation of operations with fractions. (MK)
Descriptors: Computation, Elementary Secondary Education, Higher Education, Mathematics Education
Kugel, Peter – Creative Computing, 1979
Background material related to this controversy discusses four points of view and moves to an examination of Turing's formulation of the question. (MP)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Computation, Computer Science, Computers
Zurflieh, Thomas P. – Technical Education News, 1978
The author discusses the effect of the electronic hand calculator on mathematics classes. The calculator motivates students to learn and time previously spent on computations may be used to stress functions, but students have to be reminded that calculators will not do their thinking. (MF)

Jenkins, H. D. B.; Thakur, K. P. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
This study recalculates outdated values for thermochemical radii using more reliable and elaborate calculations of lattice energy and recently obtained ancillary thermodynamic data. (BT)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computation, Data
