Neighborhood Narratives: Understanding Civic Wellness through People, Place, and Stories
Mariam M. F. Tabatabaee; Bryan Guzman
Journal of Museum Education, v50 n1 p95-108 2025
At the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a new museum being built in South Los Angeles, members of the Learning and Engagement and Social Impact divisions lead neighborhood orientations for staff from across the museum. During orientations, staff visit four neighborhoods directly surrounding the Exposition Park neighborhood, where the museum will sit; meet with community members, service organizations, and businesses; and explore cultural highlights. By taking an object-based learning and material culture approach to geographic neighborhoods and decentering the museum as the source of knowledge, museums can understand communities and their neighborhoods as a living body, with a past, a present, and a future that is constantly shifting and evolving. Knowledge of their anatomies, with their interplay of systems, historic structures, and vital components, allows museums to authentically connect to and understand the complexities of what civic wellness means to various communities, and how the museum can contribute to their overall health.
