Reys, Robert E.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1991
Computational strategies and estimating abilities of 466 Japanese students were tested and interviews with a subsample of that group were used to compare with a theoretical model based on a sample from the United States. Results of the comparison of computational and estimating abilities are presented. (CW)

Batt, Russell H., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1990
Described is how spreadsheet and problem solver microcomputer programs may assist students in performing mathematical calculations. Discussed is the application of the equation solver "MathCAD" to various areas in the undergraduate curriculum. (KR)

Cook, Marcy – Arithmetic Teacher, 1989
Presented are four activities for grades K-eight focusing on the application of mathematics to real-world situations of spending money. The objectives, directions, extensions, and answers for each activity are described. Worksheets are provided. (YP)

Wolters, G.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
Hypothesized that arithmetic calculating procedures and types of problems that necessitate more subproblems will lead to longer solution times. Data from 36 third grade students who mentally computed problems with sums greater than 20 and less than 100, confirmed both hypotheses. (RH)

Rosen, Edward M. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1990
Described are the use of spreadsheet programs in chemical engineering calculations using Lotus 1-2-3 macros. Discusses the macro commands, subroutine operations, and solution of partial differential equation. Provides examples of the subroutine programs and spreadsheet solution. (YP)

Blando, John A.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1989
Seventh-grade students were tested to uncover arithmetic errors. Answers and intermediate steps were analyzed and models to represent students' behavior were developed. Certain errors were common across students. Others were tied to the format of the test item. Some superficial understandings of mathematical concepts were exposed. (Author/DC)

Fuchs, Lynn S.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1989
A study assessed the effects of assigned versus self-selected goals and contingent versus non-contingent gameplay conditions delivered during computer-assisted math computation drill-and-practice sessions. Subjects were 20 high-school students with learning disabilities. Self-selected goals were more effective; no differences existed between…

Rusling, James F. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Investigates minimizing errors in computational methods commonly used in chemistry. Provides a series of examples illustrating the propagation of errors, finite difference methods, and nonlinear regression analysis. Includes illustrations to explain these concepts. (MVL)

Fuson, Karen C.; Willis, Gordon B. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1988
Ten teachers successfully taught first- and second-grade children to count up while keeping track with finger patterns. Learning to subtract by counting up greatly improved children's performance on take-away, compare, and equalize word problems, and enabled them to accelerate by as much as three years their learning of subtraction topics. Little, Todd D.; Widaman, Keith F. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1995
Validated models of mental addition processing by testing children and adults in a production task paradigm. Examined individual-difference relations between strategy choice parameters and criterion-related measures of ability. Found that individual differences in the apparently calculative processes that underlie numerical facility are highly…

May, Lola – Teaching PreK-8, 1995
Features five activities to nurture "number sense," promote practice in mental calculations, and promote student self-confidence in mathmatical operations. These are "hands-off" exercises that are preparatory to calculator and computer use for math. (ET)

Whitin, David J.; And Others – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1994
Describes how a children's book on counting was used in integrated mathematics-literature lessons in first-grade classrooms and how students created their own texts. (11 references) (MKR)

Schielack, Jane F.; Dockweiler, Clarence J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1992
Presents activities utilized with primary teachers to alleviate instructional concerns about using calculators and provide reasons for using calculators in their mathematics instruction. Activities address the topics of estimation, number sense, numeration, whole number and fraction operations, probability, and problem solving. (MDH)
