Peer reviewedRogers, W. Todd; Harley, Dwight – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1999
Examined item-level and test-level characteristics for items in a high-stakes school-leaving mathematics examination. Results from 158 students show that the influence of testwiseness is lessened when three-option items are used. Tests of three-option items are at least equivalent to four-option item tests in terms of internal-consistency score…

Peer reviewedO'Neil, Harold F., Jr.; Brown, Richard S. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1998
The effect of item format on metacognitive and affective processes of children in a large-scale mathematics assessment program were studied. Results from 1032 eighth graders indicate that open-ended and multiple choice items have differential effects, although these did not vary substantially as a function of gender and ethnicity. (SLD)
Descriptors: Affective Behavior, Ethnicity, Grade 8, Junior High School Students
Peer reviewedSegall, Daniel O. – Psychometrika, 1996
Maximum likelihood and Bayesian procedures are presented for item selection and scoring of multidimensional adaptive tests. A demonstration with simulated response data illustrates that multidimensional adaptive testing can provide equal or higher reliabilities with fewer items than are required in one-dimensional adaptive testing. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Bayesian Statistics, Computer Assisted Testing, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedXiao-Fan, Li – Computer Assisted Language Learning, 2000
Reveals how English test item analysis is carried out with the help of a computer-programmed approach, what significance this has, and how beneficial it could be to teachers of English all over the world. (Author/VWL)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Assisted Testing, English (Second Language), Item Analysis
Yip, Din Yan; Chiu, Ming Ming; Ho, Esther Sui Chu – International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, 2004
This study examined gender differences in students' scientific literacy as measured by OECD-PISA. In particular, we focused on the 2437 students from 140 Hong Kong schools. Hong Kong boys' and girls' science scores did not differ overall. However, boys scored higher than girls at the higher percentiles (75th and above). Moreover, specific test…

Lorsbach, Thomas C.; Reimer, Jason F. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 2005
The authors measured memory for individual features (objects only or locations only) and the combination of those features (objects and locations) in 9-, 12-, and 21-year-old students with a "yes" or "no" recognition task. Analysis of recognition memory performance (d' scores) revealed that although age differences existed in memory for individual…

Dillon, Frank; Worthington, Roger L. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 2003
Five studies on the development of the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Affirmative Counseling Self-Efficacy Inventory (LGB-CSI) were conducted. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of an initial pool of 64 items yielded 5 factors that assess counselor self-efficacy to perform lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) affirmative counseling behaviors…

Durmus, Soner; Bicak, Bayram – Online Submission, 2006
Mathematics, contrary to social sciences, is seen by many as value-free. Implications of different theories on teaching and learning applied to education including mathematics education opened doors to see mathematics in a way that it has its own values. Values can be categorized into three categories: general educational values, mathematical…

Yao, Lihua; Schwarz, Richard D. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2006
Multidimensional item response theory (IRT) models have been proposed for better understanding the dimensional structure of data or to define diagnostic profiles of student learning. A compensatory multidimensional two-parameter partial credit model (M-2PPC) for constructed-response items is presented that is a generalization of those proposed to…

Timms, Michael; Schneider, Steven; Lee, Cindy; Rolfhus, Eric – Regional Educational Laboratory Southwest (NJ1), 2007
This policy research document is intended for Arkansas policymakers to use when examining possible changes to the Arkansas state assessment's alignment with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The 2009 NAEP test is not yet in existence, so the purpose of this report is to give policymakers a head start in determining where they…

Michaels, Sarah; Shouse, Andrew W.; Schweingruber, Heidi A. – National Academies Press, 2007
What types of instructional experiences help K-8 students learn science with understanding? What do science educators, teachers, teacher leaders, science specialists, professional development staff, curriculum designers, and school administrators need to know to create and support such experiences? "Ready, Set, Science!" guides the way with an…

Cheng, Liying; Klinger, Don A.; Zheng, Ying – Language Testing, 2007
Results from the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) indicate that English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Literacy Development (ELD) students have comparatively low success and high deferral rates. This study examined the 2002 and 2003 OSSLT test performances of ESL/ELD and non-ESL/ELD students in order to identify and…

Schaeffer, Gary A.; And Others – 1993
This report contains results of a field test conducted to determine the relationship between a Graduate Records Examination (GRE) linear computer-based test (CBT) and a paper-and-pencil (P&P) test with the same items. Recent GRE examinees participated in the field test by taking either a CBT or the P&P test. Data from the field test…

Henning, Grant – 1991
Criticisms of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) have included speculation that the listening test places too much burden on short-term memory as compared with comprehension, that a knowledge of reading is required to respond successfully, and that many items appear to require mere recall and matching rather than higher-order…

Webb, Melvin W., II; Miller, Eva R. – 1995
As constructed-response items become an integral part of educational assessments, setting student performance standards on constructed-response items has become an important issue. Two standard-setting methods, one used for setting standards on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in reading in grade 8 and the other used to set…
