Peer reviewedStavchansky, Salomon; And Others – American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 1977
The Rayetheon Scientific Simulation Language (RSSL) program, an easily-used simulation on the CDC/6600 computer at the University of Texas at Austin, offers a simple method of solving differential equations on a digital computer. It is used by undergraduate biopharmaceutics-pharmacokinetics students and graduate students in all areas. (Author/LBH)
Descriptors: Allied Health Occupations Education, Biochemistry, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Graphics
Peer reviewedBaggott, James – Journal of Medical Education, 1987
A study examined how lecturers received the results of statistical analyses of student evaluations and found that most had not correctly interpreted the analysis, half wanted to improve performance, and 20 percent requested specific guidance. It was concluded that the detailed analysis results should be accompanied by individual discussions. (MSE)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Data Interpretation, Higher Education, Information Dissemination
Peer reviewedGraham, Ian – Journal of Biological Education, 1987
Reviews the use of spreadsheets and gives examples of how they can be adapted for data analysis in a science laboratory situation. Highlights the benefits and limitations of this approach for students. (ML)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Uses in Education, Educational Technology
Peer reviewedPapp, Klara K.; And Others – Journal of Medical Education, 1987
A study examined whether students beginning a cell biology course with prior knowledge of its three areas (genetics, histology, and biochemistry) would retain that advantage throughout the course and whether achievement was influenced by the order of questions in a test. (MSE)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Biochemistry, Biology, College Science
Peer reviewedAsare-Brown, Emma; Bullock, Clive – Biochemical Education, 1988
Describes three activities, substrate inhibition, product inhibition by fructose and glucose, and gel immobilization of invertase for use with undergraduate biochemistry classes. Discusses materials, methods, and results. Stresses the advantages of practical exercises in undergraduate classes. (CW)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, College Science, Enzymes, Higher Education
Peer reviewedWhite, Ray; Caskey, C. Thomas – Science, 1988
Discusses insights discovered from research into human biology that are raising possibilities for therapy, prevention of disease, and challenges to society in the form of ethical decisions about the appropriate application of genetic information. (Author/RT)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biology, College Science
Peer reviewedTraynham, James G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Described is a teaching method for connecting relative acidity among various species by the use of familiar references. Considered are teaching the acidity of alpha-hydrogens of ketones, alkylation of amides and imides, and others. (CW)
Descriptors: Acids, Biochemistry, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry
Peer reviewedAbu-Salah, Khalid M.; And Others – Biochemical Education, 1988
Describes the assessment process for students in Saudi Arabia who are interested in pursuing a higher education in biochemistry. Provides recommendations for improving biochemistry education in both high schools and universities. (TW)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, College Science, Educational Assessment, English (Second Language)
Peer reviewedFriedmann, Herbert C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Discusses the various ways that textbooks treat the energetics of protein synthesis. Offers an approach to explaining the phenomenon by emphasizing the ordering aspects of the process. Describes the participation of compounds such as ATP and GTP in the ordering process. (TW)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedPalmer, Richard E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Discusses the use of specific reactions of metabolic pathways to make measurements in the laboratory. Describes an adaptation of an experiment used in undergraduate biochemistry laboratories involving the induction of an enzyme in E. coli, as well as its partial purification and characterization. (TW)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Chemistry, College Science, Demonstrations (Educational)
Peer reviewedHerron, J. Dudley, Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1976
Cites three historical anecdotes dealing with chromatography, the bioinorganic chemistry of iron, and the Pauli effect. (MLH)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedBlackman, David – Journal of Chemical Education, 1973
Discusses the successful results of a research project which was carried out by students with full guidance and psychological support. Concludes that students are capable of designing, executing, and interpreting sophisticated experiments when treated with courtesy and respect, rather than as only students.'' (CC)
Descriptors: Academic Ability, Biochemistry, College Science, Opinions
Peer reviewedJournal of Chemical Education, 1983
Reviews two textbooks: "Principles of Biochemistry" by Albert L. Lehninger and "Inorganic Chemistry, A Modern Introduction" by Therald Moeller. Also reviews text, study guide, and laboratory manual for Morris Hein's "Foundations of College Chemistry, Fifth Edition" and text/study guide for David A. Ucko's "Basics for Chemistry." (JN)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Book Reviews, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedAdams, A. Birk – Journal of Dental Education, 1983
A nontraditional laboratory course for first-year medical students is described, consisting of two laboratory exercises adapted to the guided design strategy and a short research project. Student learning and attitudes were shown to improve, but curriculum preparation time was a major disadvantage. (MSE)
Descriptors: Achievement Gains, Biochemistry, Course Descriptions, Curriculum Development
Peer reviewedSchmude, Judy – American Biology Teacher, 1981
