Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities, v38 n5 e70146 2025
Background: Sexual violence against women with intellectual disabilities is complex and often underreported due to systemic, social, and cultural barriers. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the cultural conditions regarding the sexuality of women with intellectual disabilities that significantly limit the disclosure of sexual violence against this group. Methods: This qualitative study aimed to identify barriers to disclosing sexual violence among women with intellectual disabilities in Poland. Interviews were conducted with 15 women who had experienced such violence. Results: The findings reveal significant difficulties in recognizing and reporting violence, influenced by a lack of sexual education, social stereotypes about the sexuality of women with intellectual disabilities, and dependency on caregivers. The study also highlights the need for systemic changes, including better preparation of support services and sexual education tailored to the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: The study underscores the necessity for a holistic approach to address sexual violence against women with intellectual disabilities and calls for the implementation of policies and practices that protect their rights and dignity.
