Therapist Self-Disclosure: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Leslie Margolin1; Joseph Kupfer2
Journal of Teaching in Social Work, v45 n4 p684-700 2025
Successful psychotherapy often depends on therapist self-disclosure. However, training programs in social work and counseling have had difficulty adding therapist self-disclosure to their curricula. This article advances a teaching technique -- the comparison of two widely viewed, well-received films, "Ordinary People" and "Good Will Hunting"--that addresses that need. By comparing the depictions of psychotherapy in these movies, educators can spark conversations on the advantages of some kinds of self-disclosure and the risks of others. They can make a topic rarely discussed in trainee classrooms immediate, specific, and engaging.
