The author describes her struggles with the issues involved in doing intensive life history research. She was investigating the process of maturation of children who grew up in the San Francisco public housing projects and were able to develop sufficient psychological strength to avoid common problems of project life. The most important feature of science is that of controlled observations. There is a need for using multiple measures gathered in multiple ways from multiple sources. The intensive study of one or a few cases is a research strategy ideally suited for practicing counselors. It combines theory, research, and practice. (Author/JEL)
