The use of tests or grade point averages as the sole criterion for teacher certification or entrance into teacher education programs raises many concerns, especially about the future of minorities as teachers. This thesis is discussed and some alternatives to such standards are suggested. (JL)

Scores based on the number of correct answers were compared with scores based on dangerous responses to items in the same multiple choice test developed by American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. The President of the National Council on Measurement in Education replies to his critics. He argues that the concept of measurement error should not be used to make cut-scores more valid and that grade point averages have not been demonstrated to be valid indicators of teachers' subject matter competence.
