During a three-month clinical clerkship in medicine 175 medical students were evaluated. A proficiency assessment process was developed that included preceptor evaluation of on-the-job performance as well as oral and written examinations. Data analysis showed small correlations among the three measurements of competence. (Author/LBH)

The popular conviction that Canadian universities will experience a serious faculty shortage in the 1990s is examined through statistics on faculty aging and replacement demand, retirement conditions, faculty renewal incentives, and the supply of doctoral recipients. A study of income flow patterns and individual decisions to undertake college-level study suggests that perceived income and other labor market prospects influence student decisions but vary with age and discipline.
