English Catholic laity wanted to establish lay schools independent of bishops. The bishops wanted one school for clerical and lay students. Compromising, they established under joint management clerical/lay schools throughout Great Britain. Never really satisfied, Catholic laity established two lay schools, both of which eventually failed. (RM)

In 1974, the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown (Ohio) surveyed all incoming freshmen at its six high schools. The same students were studied as seniors in 1978 and an additional sample of rural Catholic students was surveyed in 1976.
