English Catholic laity wanted to establish lay schools independent of bishops. The bishops wanted one school for clerical and lay students. Compromising, they established under joint management clerical/lay schools throughout Great Britain. Never really satisfied, Catholic laity established two lay schools, both of which eventually failed. (RM)
