D'Introno, Francesco; Lorenzo, Guillermo – Hispania, 1995
Examines the structure of titles in Spanish. These structures have a sealed character with respect to the extraction of their constituent parts. Certain instances in which this generalization appears not to be followed are analyzed, and it is shown that the extraction is a verb rather than a noun form. (15 references) (Author/CK)

Browne, Michael W. – Psychometrika, 1992
Structural models that yield circumplex inequality patterns are reviewed, focusing on a model developed by T. W. Anderson (1960). A modification is proposed to this model to allow for negative correlations. This model may be reparameterized as a factor analysis model with nonlinear constraints on the factor loadings. (SLD)

Meulman, Jacqueline J. – Psychometrika, 1992
The distance approach to nonlinear multivariate analysis proposed by J. J. Meulman (1986) is reviewed. Several generalizations are discussed by combining features from the conventional multivariate analysis approach, which seeks weighted sums of variables, with the alternative approach, which seeks to fit distances. (SLD)

Erkkila, John E. – CD-ROM Professional, 1991
This explanation of how the basic economic model of pricing applies to the CD-ROM industry considers the supply and demand sides of the market and compares three distinct pricing strategies: (1) pricing to maximize profits; (2) average cost pricing; and (3) marginal cost pricing. (EAM)

Margulis, Eugene L. – Information Processing and Management, 1993
Reports on the validity of the Multiple Poisson (nP) model of word distribution in full-text document collections. A practical algorithm for determining whether a certain word is distributed according to an nP distribution and the results of a test of this algorithm in three different document collections are described. (14 references) (KRN)

Schagen, I. P. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
A model for the age standardization of test scores is presented, which is fitted to the percentile points of the raw score distribution and assumes a linear trend of each percentile with age. The model's applications in standardizing tests and diagnostic plots produced by a computer program--STANEW--are described. (SLD)

Carson, S. R. – Physics Education, 1999
Describes a simple demonstration in which students toss crumpled paper on opposite sides of a classroom and graph the results in order to demonstrate dynamic equilibrium. (WRM)

Blubaugh, William L.; Emmons, Kristin – Mathematics Teacher, 1999
Provides activities that support students as they develop their intuitive notions of graphs. Activities help students describe the relationships expressed in the graphs and make generalizations about inferences on the basis of the visual image. (ASK)

Wilson, Jodi; Brown, Roger – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1998
Discusses the use of Calculator Based Ranger (CBR) in mathematics classrooms. Provides a classroom activity in which students graph walking in different directions and speeds. Presents student work and testing. (ASK)

Petry, Frederick E.; Cobb, Maria A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
Presents a model for representing and storing binary topological and directional relationships between 2-dimensional objects that is used to provide a basis for fuzzy querying capabilities. A data structure called an abstract spatial graph (ASG) is defined for the binary relationships that maintains all necessary information regarding topology and…

Monk, G. S. – Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal, 1994
Reports on a study of students' responses to two types of questions on final examinations in calculus. Concludes that the two kinds of understanding--pointwise and across time--are clearly distinguishable. Discusses the differences between these two types of understanding. (ASK)

Friel, Susan N.; Bright, George W.; Curcio, Frances R. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1997
Focuses on the role of graphs as part of the statistical investigation process. Recommends that teachers explore students' thinking in terms of what it says about their graph sense. Suggests that teachers take time to reflect on how their thinking may be changing as they listen more closely to their students. Contains 17 references. (DDR)

Hennessy, Sara; Fung, Pat; Scanlon, Eileen – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2001
Examines the impact of the recent shift towards calculating and computing tools on the nature of learning in traditionally difficult curriculum area. Focuses on the use of graphic calculators by undergraduates taking an innovative new mathematics course at Open University. Indicates that graphic calculator technology acted as a critical mediator…

Geldenhuys, Gerhard; Human, Lezanne – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1996
Describes an index of cohesion for the investigation of communication between authors or academic units and compares it with the Brillouin-Shaw index. Communication and cooperation between researchers is discussed and graph theory is explained, especially cooperation graphs. (Author/LRW)

Pushkin, David B.; Zheng, Ting Fang – Physics Education, 1995
Using a computer and thermistor probes, students analyze graphs of temperature versus time. The experiment demonstrates phase changes in water, which can lead to a broader interpretation of matter, its properties, and the laws of thermodynamics. (Author/AIM)
