Although the birth rate among every maternal age group in the United States is declining, among teenagers the decline is evident only for older adolescents, regardless of marital status. Data were collected in 1980 and 1982 on the non-coital and coital sexual experiences of male and female adolescents. Findings indicate that Whites are more likely than Blacks to engage in a predictable series of non-coital behaviors before their first intercourse experience. At least 30 percent of newborn children of alcoholic mothers are affected severely by the fetal alcohol syndrome and 40-45 percent show some stigmata. Risks to offspring of mothers who drink occasionally or binge drink are not clear, but the danger is probably greatest in the first trimester of pregnancy. (CMG)

Questions the common assumption that premarital pregnancy is specially motivated. Contends that it is usually the unanticipated outcome of sexual activity. Results of research on sample of 337 unmarried black teenagers indicates that experience with birth control was strongly related to the way sex was viewed by their mothers. (RJ)

Assessed contraceptive attitudes and intention to use a condom at next intercourse among 1,880 adolescent males. Findings showed that about three-fifths of sexually experienced and inexperienced adolescent males intending to have sex in the next year reported an "almost certain chance" of condom use with a hypothetical future partner. Investigated acoustic characteristics of the cries of 20 infants whose mothers used marijuana during pregnancy. Cries of infants of marijuana users were shorter, had a higher percentage of dysphonation, a higher amd more variable fundamental frequency, and a lower first format than cries of 20 infants in a control group.
