Academic and Research Integrity in Nepali Universities: A Comprehensive Policy Analysis

Academic and research integrity policies serve as important mechanisms for universities worldwide to maintain ethical standards and prevent misconduct. Using qualitative content analysis, we examined publicly available policy documents (n = 24) across Nepal's higher education system from 13 universities and the University Grants Commission (UGC). Using a framework of five core elements for exemplary academic integrity policy, our analysis showed that while the UGC and 10 universities maintained some integrity requirements, only four universities and the UGC possessed dedicated integrity policy documents. Most existing policies emphasized punitive measures rather than promoting integrity. Based on these findings, we developed 15 policy recommendations and urge Nepali higher education institutions, UGC, and leadership to implement these suggestions when revising their academic integrity frameworks.
