The School Counselor's Role in the Implementation of Suicide Postvention Protocol
Lindsey Rachel Fisher
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
This study examined the role of the school counselor in the implementation of suicide postvention protocol. Specifically, after a student suicide has a occurred. The researcher collected data via a Qualtrics survey where qualified school counselors answered closed and open-ended questions. School counselors were then given the option to participate in a interview regarding their experience in a suicide postvention setting. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and constructivist grounded theory. The results include input from 10 school counselors who have been involved in suicide postvention within their school districts. The findings implied that school counselors desire a comprehensive suicide postvention protocol that outlines their role, offers continued education and training, and collaborates with other community mental health resources. The results highlighted the need for further training for school counselors on postvention as well as increased communication between school counselors and administration.
