In a pilot study, youth of a small town in the Southwest were surveyed regarding their drug and alcohol use. Mexican American students used drugs more heavily than Anglo students, and Mexican American females were especially heavy users. Sociolinguistic studies of spoken Arabic show at least three varieties at different levels of prestige: (1) Modern Standard Arabic (MSA); (2) regional standard with local prestige; and (3) vernacular varieties.
