Osserman, Robert – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1981
The rebirth of geometry is predicted in the coming years as the pendulum swings back from extreme devotion to structure, abstraction, and generality. (MP)

Lang, Bryan; Ruane, Peter – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1981
The status and nature of geometry as presently taught in English secondary schools is examined. An almost total absence of deductive geometry was found, with many topics such as topology, vectors, coordinates, and transformations introduced but not covered in depth. (MP)

Cohen, Martin P.; Walsh, Margaret, Sr. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
This study tested the relative efficacy of two modes of instruction, individual and traditional, for promoting learning and retention of selected geometrical concepts. The results of the study did not indicate a significant effect on learning or retention due to the mode of instruction. (Author/MK)

DuRapau, V. J., Jr.; Carry, L. Ray – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1981
In this study with 132 secondary school geometry students, three significant aptitude by treatment interactions were found. Students with high reasoning scores and those with high processing scores profited more from the transformational treatment on point and line symmetry. (MP)

Swetz, Frank – Mathematics Teacher, 1979
The NCTM delegation's visit to the People's Republic of China in the fall of 1977 is described. Mathematics education in China is presented in terms of mathematical content taught. (MK)

Dumais, Jean-Francois – American Journal of Physics, 1979
Shows, by a judicious exploitation of the Runge-Lenz vector, that the Kepler initial value problem is endowed with a nice geometric structure which enables one to determine, after a single trivial arithmetic calculation, the orbit associated with any given set of initial data. (Author/GA)
Descriptors: Astronomy, College Science, Geometry, Higher Education
Giles, Geoff – Mathematics Teaching, 1979
A discussion is given of the techniques for and advantages of using teaching aids based on the "rotogram." (MK)

Lund, Charles – Mathematics Teacher, 1979
Some classroom discoveries are reported concerning artistic patterns related to Pascal's triangle that can be generated by the computer. (MP)

Mathematics Teacher, 1979
Classroom related topics discussed are: cryptics and statistics; understanding absolute value; recognizing quadratic equations with no real roots; and two derivations of a formula for finding the distance from a point to a line. (MP)

Marino, George – Mathematics Teacher, 1977
Directions are given for making a model of a three-dimensional coordinate graph. (DT)
Descriptors: Algebra, Geometry, Graphs, Instruction
Zhiping, Liu; Pengzhi, Liu – Gifted Education International, 1997
Highlights a mathematics program for gifted students (ages 6-8) in Beijing. Different components of the program are described, including using audiovisual geometry, emphasizing the combination of shape and number, stimulating imagination, applying the discovery method, and using the search-out model. Provides sample math problems. (CR)

Lemme, Barbara S. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1998
Presents a plan involving routine classroom tasks to integrate mathematics with cooperative learning teams in a second-grade class. Explains the process and describes some of the ways in which the activities are used to provide an opportunity for the team and the student to apply mathematics. Concludes that cooperative learning has many merits.…

Gregg, Jeff – Mathematics Teacher, 1997
Describes an episode involving conditional statements and the notion of logical equivalence that occurred in a 10th-grade college-preparatory geometry class. Illustrates some of the confusion that can arise in connection with this topic, for both students and teachers. (ASK)

Boulton-Lewis, Gillian M.; And Others – Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 1996
Describes a study in which Australian children aged 5-8 years old (N=70) were presented with a range of measurement tasks to determine the strategies and devices that they would choose to use to measure length. Results are in conflict with the normal curriculum sequence. Contains 30 references. (DDR)
