Mitchell, Tracy A.; Finnocchio, Debbie; Kua, Jeremy – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
An exercise is described which introduces students to using concepts in thermochemistry to predict relative stability of a hypervalent molecule. Students will compare the energies of formation for both fluoride and the hydride by calculations and they will also explore the issue of partial ionic character in polar covalent bonds.

Will, Tamara J.; McWatters, Melissa K.; McQuade, Kristi L. – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2006
This article describes an undergraduate biochemistry laboratory investigating the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in yeast. In this exercise, the enzyme beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) is expressed in yeast under the control of a stress response promoter. Following exposure to heat stress to induce beta-gal expression, cycloheximide is added to halt…

Harley, Carolyn W.; Darby-King, Andrea; McCann, Jennifer; McLean, John H. – Learning & Memory, 2006
We proposed that mitral cell [beta]1-adrenoceptor activation mediates rat pup odor preference learning. Here we evaluate [beta]1-, [beta]2-, [alpha]1-, and [alpha]2-adrenoceptor agonists in such learning. The [beta]1-adrenoceptor agonist, dobutamine, and the [alpha]1-adrenoceptor agonist, phenylephrine, induced learning, and both exhibited an…

Miller, Courtney A.; Sweatt, J. David – Learning & Memory, 2006
Post-retrieval interference with a memory has uncovered a phenomenon known to the field as reconsolidation. In this article, we will review the specific molecular mechanisms that have been implicated in reconsolidation. As a result of numerous studies over the past five years, it can now be said with a fair amount of certainty that reconsolidation…

Glassy, Wingfield V. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2006
A series of spreadsheet modeling exercises constructed as part of a new upper-level elective course on solid state materials and surface chemistry is described. The spreadsheet exercises are developed to provide students with the opportunity to interact with the conceptual framework where the role of the density of states and the Fermi-Dirac…

Shaffer, Alan A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2006
The application of Lewis concept that provides students opportunity to predict and understand reaction behavior and themes in introductory chemistry of structure-property relationships of atoms, ions, and molecules is narrated. The general sequence takes the student through atomic structural theory, electronic configuration, periodicity, chemical…

Virji, Shabnam; Weiller, Bruce H.; Huang, Jiaxing; Blair, Richard; Shepherd, Heather; Faltens, Tanya; Haussmann, Philip C.; Kaner, Richard B.; Tolbert, Sarah H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2008
The electrical properties of polyaniline changes by orders of magnitude upon exposure to analytes such as acids or bases, making it a useful material for detection of these analytes in the gas phase. The objectives of this lab are to synthesize different diameter polyaniline nanofibers and compare them as sensor materials. In this experiment…

Brown, R. D. – Australian Science Teachers Journal, 1975
Presents various ideas on the origin of life including very early ideas, Oparin's view, and an alternative view related to carbonaceous chondrites. Outlines one currently tenable hypothesis in the formation of the solar system and explains the method involved in detecting polyatomic molecules in dark nebulae. (GS)

Glidewell, Christopher; Lloyd, Douglas – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Explores the extent to which, in polycyclic hydrocarbons, the total pi electron population tends to form small (4n plus 2) groups and avoid the formation of 4n groups. Also discusses the relation of this trend to resonance energy stabilizations. (JN)

Ayorinde, Folahan O. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Describes steps (using monochiral and multichiral molecules) to enable students to arrive with relative ease at correct stereochemical relationships. The approach assumes familiarity with Fischer projection formulas and assignment of R and S absolute configurations. (JN)

Kouyoumdjian, E. R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
The generator set of a group is the subset of the set of elements of the group. The nature and use of generator sets is discussed, focusing on generator sets for the noncubic symmetry point groups containing one, two, and three symmetry elements. (JN)
