Webster, Raymond E.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1989
Examined concurrent validity of Wide-Range Achievement Test-Revised and Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement with teacher estimates of classroom performance in reading and mathematics, comparing test performance of average third and fourth graders (N=134). Results suggest that adequate assessment of achievement requires selective use of…

Fennema, Elizabeth; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1990
Examines teachers' choices of most and least successful students in terms of mathematics test scores. Teachers were most inaccurate when selecting most successful boys. Teachers tended to relate success to ability with boys and to effort with girls. (Author/YP)

Ethington, Corinna A. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1990
Investigates patterns of sex differences for responses to problems across the countries involved in the Second International Mathematics Study. Reports no substantial gender effects on any of the content areas using the median polishing method. (YP)

Raphael, Dennis; Wahlstrom, Merlin – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1989
Analyzes the Second International Mathematics Study data on the use of instructional aids by 103 Ontario grade eight mathematics teachers using dual-scaling analysis. The effect of instructional aids did not remain after the influence of topic coverage was removed. (Author/YP)

Dineen, Parsla; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1989
Described is a study which was designed to investigate the effects of two evaluation methods on the learning process in mathematics courses. States that in one method students were given daily tests; the second method relied on weekly tests. No significant differences were noted; however certain trends were apparent. (RT)

Mac Iver, Douglas – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1988
The effects of classroom practices on stratification of students' self-perceptions of math ability were estimated in 67 upper elementary math classes (N=1,612 students) from predominantly White, middle-class communities. Results suggest that the effects of task structure depend on the actual dispersion of ability levels in the class. (SLD)

Linder, C. J.; Hudson, H. T. – Science Education, 1989
States that the relationship between mathematics and physics in the first year college level might be similar for populations from different national and cultural backgrounds. Reports student responses in two schools on topics covered by a mathematics test. The similarities and differences between the two groups are discussed. (YP)

deBettencourt, Laurie U.; Putnam, Ralph T. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1993
Compared use of derived fact strategies involving addition and subtraction by 20 learning-disabled students (LDSs) from an intermediate level self-contained class to 22 grade-3 normally achieving students (NASs). LDSs did not differ from NASs in verbal fluency or use of alternative strategies. (Contains 20 references.) (MDH)

Smith, John P. III – Cognition and Instruction, 1995
Analyzed students' reasoning with fractions. Found that skilled students applied strategies specifically tailored to restricted classes of fractions and produced reliable solutions with a minimum of computation effort. Results suggest that competent reasoning depends on a knowledge base that includes numerically specific and invented strategies,…
