Stegman, Mark; Stephens, Larry J. – High School Magazine, 2000
Studies on possible high-school athletics/academic achievement correlations are inconclusive. A study of juniors and seniors at an exemplary high school in Omaha, Nebraska, showed that high-participating students of both sexes outperformed less active counterparts in three categories: class rank, mean GPA, and math GPA. (MLH)

Edwards, Thomas; Kahn, Steven; Brenton, Lawrence – Journal of Education for Students Placed at Risk, 2001
Describes a mathematics-focused summer camp for inner city, African American, at-risk secondary school students. Situated on a college campus, the camp grouped participants with college students and professional mathematicians. Results of pre- and posttests indicated that students' mathematics scores increased significantly. Both participants and…

Li, Chieh; Nuttall, Ronald – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2001
Indicates that writing Chinese is correlated to Chinese-American (CA) students' spatial skills and investigates whether writing Chinese would have the same relationship to mathematics skills. Suggested a strong correlation between writing Chinese and success on SAT-Math. Supports the cultural relativity theory of gender difference on SAT-Math.…

Choi, Kilchan – Asia Pacific Education Review, 2001
Uses longitudinal study of differences between boys and girls in levels of mathematics and science achievement across grades 7 through 10 to extend hierarchical modeling to allow for regression among latent variables using a fully Bayesian approach. (Contains 30 references.) (PKP)

Miles, T. R.; Haslum, M. N.; Wheeler, T. J. – Annals of Dyslexia, 2001
Seventy-two items testing various aspects of mathematics were given to 12,131 10-year-old British children. Despite the absence of difference in intelligence level, the mean scores on the mathematics test for children with dyslexia was not only lower than that of normal achievers, but also lower than that of underachievers. Tornroos, Jukka – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 2005
Opportunity to learn is considered an important contributing factor in learning outcomes. In some of the latest international comparative studies of mathematics achievement, such as SIMS and TIMSS, painstaking efforts have been made to find out what the participating students' opportunities to learn mathematics had been. However, there have been…

Ding, Cody S.; Davison, Mark L.; Petersen, Anne C. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2005
Latent growth curve modeling provides a powerful and flexible tool for researchers to study individual differences in change as well as the correlates and predictors of change. Recent developments in estimation and hypothesis testing procedures are largely based on confirmatory structural equation approaches. In this article, an alternative…
