Seeing, Saying, and Symbolizing Division by Zero
Patrick Sullivan; Adam Harbaugh; Joann Barnett
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v118 n12 p919-929 2025
This article shares the experience of implementing a lesson involving division by zero to a group of third graders. The authors intend to provide a brief overview contrasting the two types of division, sharing, and measurement, and explain why one type is better for classroom discussions that involve division by zero. This provides teachers with a window into the development and implementation of a set of tasks that engaged students in reasoning about division involving zero.
