Hombas, Vassilios – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2012
This article shows a generalization of Galileo's "passe-dix" game. The game was born following one of Galileo's [G. Galileo, "Sopra le Scoperte dei Dadi" (Galileo, Opere, Firenze, Barbera, Vol. 8). Translated by E.H. Thorne, 1898, pp. 591-594] explanations on a paradox that occurred in the experiment of tossing three fair "six-sided" dice.…

Tabach, Michal; Levenson, Esther; Barkai, Ruthi; Tsamir, Pessia; Tirosh, Dina; Dreyfus, Tommy – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2012
Policy documents and researchers agree that proofs and proving should become common mathematical practice in school mathematics. Towards this end, teachers are encouraged to implement proving activities in their classrooms. This article suggests a tool that may help teachers to integrate proofs and proving in their practice--the six-cell matrix.…

Soto-Johnson, Hortensia; Fuller, Evan – Investigations in Mathematics Learning, 2012
In this qualitative study, we explored how oral interviews can inform instructors about students' understanding of abstract algebra and their ability to construct a proof in this setting. Our findings indicate that some students had a good understanding of the ideas needed for a subgroup proof, but could not write a coherent proof. On the other…

Lund, Thorleif – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 2010
The purpose of the present paper is to critically examine causal inferences and internal validity as defined by Campbell and co-workers. Several arguments are given against their counterfactual effect definition, and this effect definition should be considered inadequate for causal research in general. Moreover, their defined independence between…

Buyukgoze-Kavas, Aysenur – Australian Journal of Career Development, 2014
In the present study, the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS)--which aims to measure concern, control, curiosity, and confidence as psychosocial resources for managing occupational transitions, developmental tasks, and work traumas--was translated into Turkish in order to examine the factor structure and psychometric characteristics of the scale…

Liang, Chaoyun; Chia, Tsorng-Lin – Creativity Research Journal, 2014
Three studies were combined to test the reliability, validity, and factor structure of the imaginative capability scale (ICS). The ICS was a new self-report measure, which was developed to be empirically valid and easy to administer. Study 1 consisted in an exploratory factor analysis to determine the most appropriate structure of the ICS in a…

Angkananon, Kewalin; Wald, Mike; Gilbert, Lester – Themes in Science and Technology Education, 2014
This paper focuses on the development and evaluation of a Technology Enhanced Interaction Framework and Method that can help with designing accessible mobile learning interactions involving disabled people. This new framework and method were developed to help design technological support for communication and interactions between people,…

Mudarra, Maria J.; Lázaro Martínez, Ángel – Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology, 2014
Introduction: The current study demonstrates empirical and cultural validity of "La Clave Profesional" (Spanish adaptation of Career Key, Jones's test based Holland's RIASEC model). The process of providing validity evidence also includes a reflection on personal and career development and examines the relationahsips between RIASEC…

Kilic Cakmak, Ebru; Cebi, Ayça; Kan, Adnan – Educational Sciences: Theory and Practice, 2014
The purpose of the current study is to develop a "social presence scale" for e-learning environments. A systematic approach was followed for developing the scale. The scale was applied to 461 students registered in seven different programs at Gazi University. The sample was split into two subsamples on a random basis (n1 = 261; n2 =…

Cox, Troy L.; Clifford, Ray – Foreign Language Annals, 2014
Because listening has received little attention and the validation of ability scales describing multidimensional skills is always challenging, this study applied a multistage, criterion-referenced approach that used a framework of aligned audio passages and listening tasks to explore the validity of the ACTFL and related listening proficiency…

Russo-Ponsaran, Nicole M.; Yesensky, Jessica; Hessl, David; Berry-Kravis Elizabeth – American Journal on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, 2014
Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and the most common known genetic cause of autism. FXS is associated with psychiatric impairments, including anxiety disorders. There is a paucity of well-developed measures to characterize anxiety in FXS. However, such scales are needed to measure therapeutic…

Daire, Andrew P.; Dominguez, Vanessa N.; Carlson, Ryan G.; Case-Pease, Jenene – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2014
We administered the Family Adjustment Measure to 368 parents of children with special needs to identify positive adjustment. We randomly split the sample to conduct exploratory factor analysis ("n" = 194) and confirmatory factor analysis ("n" = 174). Results indicated four possible subscales and that explain 51% of the variance.

Young, Meredith E.; Cruess, Sylvia R.; Cruess, Richard L.; Steinert, Yvonne – Advances in Health Sciences Education, 2014
Physicians function as clinicians, teachers, and role models within the clinical environment. Negative learning environments have been shown to be due to many factors, including the presence of unprofessional behaviors among clinical teachers. Reliable and valid assessments of clinical teacher performance, including professional behaviors, may…

Greenslade, Kathryn J.; Coggins, Truman E. – International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, 2014
Background: Identifying what a communication partner is looking at (referential intention) and why (social intention) is essential to successful social communication, and may be challenging for children with social communication deficits. This study explores a clinical task that assesses these intention-reading abilities within an authentic…
