Sage Research Methods Cases
In this case study, we discuss the affordances of using vignettes in a survey to capture the perceptions of the actual experiences from diverse participants in short-term overseas experiential learning trips, even after a significant time lag. The evidence is drawn from an ongoing research study examining the impact of these trips on various student learning outcomes. The vignette survey questionnaire is one of the data collection instruments in this study. The participants for the survey are students from a residential college in a Southeast Asian university who had completed one or more of the experiential learning trips between 2012 and 2023. To address the concern regarding the time lag of the occurrences of the trips conducted across the years (and to different countries), a vignette survey design was adopted to examine the relationships between intentional and innovative pedagogies and the learning outcomes from the perspective of the students. We elaborate on how the vignettes were created through a content analysis of preexisting data from the various trips. These vignettes were similar to situations from the lived experiences of the students during the trips. We describe the process of creating the content for the vignettes and then the systematic analysis of the data that was collected through the survey. We then reflect on the benefits of using vignettes to help students recall their lived experiences and the various aspects of learning across the various study trips over time. Finally, we highlight the challenges of vignette survey research in terms of the survey administration, the predictive analyses, and the interpretation of the findings.
