Goldstein, David M.; Wicklund, David A. – Child Development, 1973
Goal of this study was to obtain information pertaining to what is acquired when children gain the ability to reproduce a diagonal pattern. (Authors/CB)

Angiolillo-Bent, Joel S.; Rips, Lance J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1982
Two strings of letters were presented. Subjects were instructed to indicate whether the second string contained the same elements as the first, regardless of position. Reaction time increased with the number of positions that the letters were displaced. Results indicate that order may be an important factor in retrieval from memory. (Author/BW)

Pauker, Andy – Mathematics Teacher, 1979
Tree diagrams with numbers in a given pattern generate questions related to pattern recognition and number concepts such as binary numbers and exponentials. (MP)
Descriptors: Instruction, Integers, Learning Activities, Number Concepts
Robinson, Rosemary – Mathematics Teaching, 1979
The use of dice and dominoes in the classroom is discussed as leading from counting activities to pattern recognition and discovery learning. (MP)

Ouellette, Hugh – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
A method for solving certain types of problems is illustrated by problems related to Fibonacci's triangle. The method involves pattern recognition, generalizing, algebraic manipulation, and mathematical induction. (MP)
Descriptors: Algebra, Induction, Mathematics Education, Pattern Recognition
Johnson, David C. – Mathematics Teaching, 1978
Four categories of abuses are discussed: calculations, games and puzzles; mystical button pushing; and checking answers. Useful activities are illustrated for the categories of calculations, patterns, exploration, applications, and new content. (MP)

Loomis, Alden H. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
Some patterns resulting from certain operations on numbers are discussed, analyzed, and explained. A method for predicting the outcome of these operations for any number is developed.

Wiebe, Arthur – AIMS, 1996
Presents activities that emphasize engaging students in proportional reasoning. Introduces students to the rules involved in recognizing proportions and invites students to discover how the numbers in an ordered pair are related. (JRH)

Takano, Yohtaro – Cognitive Psychology, 1989
A form perception theory is proposed in an attempt to understand problems in mental rotation and in perception of forms rotated in the frontal-parallel plane. The theory, along with distinctions among four types of information, was supported by two mental and three visual experiments with 74 undergraduate students. (TJH)

Boreham, N. C. – Studies in the Education of Adults, 1988
The author describes various professionals' need for the ability to diagnose problems in their areas of expertise. Three psychological models are examined: (1) scientific rationality, (2) the template model, and (3) the interactionist model. The author discusses the integration of information on diagnostic processes into the adult professional…
