Essays on Digitalization and New Venture Internationalization
Tabitha Karimi Muchungu
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
This dissertation examines the role of digitalization in new venture internationalization in three studies: a systematic literature review, a quantitative study, and a qualitative study. The systematic literature review synthesizes existing literature in the research domains of digitalization and international opportunity recognition, as well as digitalization and internationalization, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the literature, identify gaps, and guide future research. This review establishes the theoretical and empirical framework for the subsequent studies. Building on these insights, the quantitative study investigates the impact of digital technologies on international opportunity recognition, mediated by business analytics capability and moderated by environmental dynamism. Survey data from 165 new ventures based in the United States of America are analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. The findings reveal an indirect-only mediation, where the entire effect of digital technologies on international opportunity recognition operates entirely through business analytics capability. However, environmental dynamism did not produce an amplifying effect on this relationship, contrary to expectations. The qualitative study explores how digital technologies shape the speed, degree, and scope of internationalization. Interviews with seven entrepreneurs of new ventures highlight how and why digital technologies support this process. Key capabilities such as marketing, networking, and technological capabilities are identified as facilitators, with the entrepreneur's human capital shaping the contingencies that influence outcomes. Together, these studies provide theoretical insights and practical implications for understanding the interplay between digitalization and new venture internationalization, drawing on data from the United States Small Business Administration and Data Axle.
