Australian National University's Centre for Continuing Education has been studying changing societal patterns in family life, education, and work. Although continuing education can help insure the consideration of women's perspectives, its role is limited in regard to economic and technological change. (SK)

Describes a survey conducted to determine full-time faculty perceptions of and involvement in community services efforts at selected Ohio community colleges. Describes a study comparing learner control and program control, and the effects of giving learners information about their achievements in relation to criterion during instruction. Practitioner interest in part time postgraduate, off-campus study leading to a PharmD degree was assessed by administering a non-self-selective survey to 202 practitioners attending continuing education programs in six geographic regions in Kentucky. Verbal coding and listening comprehension ability differed among skilled and less skilled readers in second, third, and fifth grades. As verbal coding speed increased, comprehension skill became the more important predictor of reading skill. Apparently, verbal coding processes, which are slow, inhibit other reading processes. Glass' (1976) meta-analytic techniques were used to integrate findings from 59 independent evaluations of computer-based college teaching. The meta-analysis found little relationship among study findings and design features of the experiments, settings for the studies, or manner and date of publication of the findings. (Author/GK)

Fluctuations in biological processes over time, defined as periodicities, affect all facets of life including family relationships. Periodicities may be a factor in marital and family problems and should be studied by child and family experts. (Author/JAC)

A process-product study examined the relationship between the percentage of teacher time on task and the percentage of teacher-centered instruction and the achievement of seventh- and eighth-grade students. (JN)

Some issues under the control of districts, schools, and teachers that strongly bear on pupil learning are discussed. The issues are: curricular control, grouping and class size; pull-out programs; teachers' support staffs; school schedules; and homework policies. (RL)
