Who Uses Self-Help?: Predictors of Self-Help Utilization for Managing Stress among College Students
Alyson Taylor Harden
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The William Paterson University of New Jersey
Stress and mental health difficulties are common burdens on college students. Although a small minority of these students receive psychological services, counseling centers have been overrun by demand. Thus, self-help interventions may offer a promising alternative to traditional college counseling services. The current study examined the influence of stress, motivation to change, and self-efficacy on 125 college students' use of self-help resources, to determine whether these factors would predict follow-up with self-help stress-management recommendations. Results of stepwise linear regression models suggest that motivation to change significantly predicted self-help resource utilization. In addition, motivation to change was found to be particularly important when self-help recommendations are open-ended (e.g., a handout with suggested stress-reduction strategies). Different types of self-help recommendations did not predict different levels of follow-up. These findings aim to fill gaps in the current literature regarding which college students make use of self-help resources. Specifically, the current findings may allow for targeted individual treatment recommendations to assure meaningful follow through.
