Matching Motivation to Purpose: Relaunching the Art Institute of Chicago's Volunteer Program
Robin Schnur
Journal of Museum Education, v49 n2 p219-228 2024
As part of a broader evolution of our K-12 programming, the Art Institute of Chicago transitioned our docent program into a newly designed Volunteer Program, a process that was informed by rigorous research, reflection, and evaluation of our engagements with students and teachers. This case study offers a perspective on designing a new structure for volunteer engagement, including defining and aligning new volunteer roles to strategic priorities, the process for reinviting former volunteers to join the new program and matching them to roles, and an overview of a new onboarding and training program grounded in equity and inclusion.
