Interviews with 100 individuals (ages 10-24 years) with mental retardation revealed that age and level of retardation significantly affected self-awareness. Subjects exhibited higher awareness of self and immediate family compared to awareness of facilities in the neighborhood, religion, holidays, and sense of right and wrong. (JDD)

Evaluation of data on the sexual knowledge, needs, and experience of people with mental retardation found an unmet need for sexual knowledge, caused partly by the largely negative attitudes of caregivers and parents about the sexuality of these individuals. Adolescents with mental retardation viewed a story enacted with props and were asked questions about the knowledge and beliefs of the characters. Subjects performed worse than did nondisabled children matched for mental age. Subjects did better on questions requiring first-order reasoning than on those involving second-order reasoning. This study assessed Caucasian college students' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding sunbathing. Surveys indicated concern with attractiveness was a major motivation for frequent sunbathing. Frequent sunbathers were more likely to be women and to report fewer self-perceived risk factors and less likely to use sunscreen. (SM)
