Hall, Robert J. – Academic Therapy, 1984
The author analyzes the problem-solving nature of spelling, notes its cognitive components, and reviews research findings relevant to learning disabled students. He emphasizes the need to understand spelling developmentally and chart-succeeding stages. (CL)

Michaelides, Michalis P.; Haertel, Edward H. – Center for Research on Evaluation Standards and Student Testing CRESST, 2004
There is variability in the estimation of an equating transformation because common-item parameters are obtained from responses of samples of examinees. The most commonly used standard error of equating quantifies this source of sampling error, which decreases as the sample size of examinees used to derive the transformation increases. In a…

Carpenter, Dale – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1983
Spelling error patterns of 30 disabled readers (grades 3 through 6) were compared to error patterns of 40 younger able readers (grades 1 through 3), and 37 able readers of the same age. Discriminant analyses indicated distinguishing patterns, primarily between the disabled readers and the older able readers. (Author/SEW)

Franklin, Melvin R., Jr.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1982
Examined the extent of examiner error during administration of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) by practicing school psychologists and school psychology students eligible for state certification as psychometrists. A number of examiner item scoring and administration errors were observed for numerous subtests. (RC)

Pohlmann, John T. – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1979
The type I error rate in stepwise regression analysis deserves serious consideration by researchers. The problem-wide error rate is the probability of selecting any variable when all variables have population regression weights of zero. Appropriate significance tests are presented and a Monte Carlo experiment is described. (Author/CTM)

Magowan, S. A. – Scottish Educational Review, 1980
This brief overview on dyslexia notes the problems of defining this syndrome, presents a profile of a "typical" dyslexic child, and describes the three sub-types of dyslexia which have been identified. (SJL)

Montgomery, Henry; Allwood, Carl Martin – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1978
Think aloud data were gathered from 19 subjects solving three statistical problems. Good problem solvers differed from poor in that they (1) more often clarified essential concepts related to the problem, or (2) appeared to attend more closely to what was actually asked for in the problem. (Author/SJL)

McGregor, Karla K.; Windsor, Jennifer – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1996
A study of 8 preschoolers with word-finding deficits and 16 preschoolers with normal word-finding abilities examined the effects of priming on naming accuracy. Results indicated the preschoolers with word-finding deficits were unable to name as well as the other children when given primes as retrieval cues. (CR)

Suddendorf, Thomas – Child Development, 2003
Three experiments in which photo or video presentations could guide one's search for a hidden object showed that under certain circumstances even 24-month-olds displayed representational insight. The first two experiments replicated earlier findings of chance performance across 4 trials, with 24-month-olds performing above chance in 3 of 4…
