Investigating Civic Engagement of Young Children in Two Countries: The Case of Türkiye and the United States of America
Betül Demiray Sandiraz
Journal of International Social Studies, v15 n2 p49-81 2025
The purpose of this study is to explore children's understandings, attitudes, and experiences related to civic engagement. Interviews were conducted with children, ages 9-12, living in Türkiye and the United States of America. In each country, three children were interviewed to understand their everyday lives in relation to civic engagement. Perspectives from two distinct countries helped to explain children's different experiences and conceptualizations in diverse civic spaces. Children's responses revealed their awareness of historical and current events, their understanding of authority and rules, individual and collective actions taken by them, and their willingness to be engaged members of their community in future. Despite the differences in children's understandings and experiences, their capabilities and potential for civic engagement and their willingness to be civic agents were a common point within and across children living in two countries.
