Participation in Online Courses from the Perspective of Bourdieu's Cultural Capital Theory: A European Comparative Study
European Education, v57 n3 p209-227 2025
This article investigates cross-national inequalities in online course participation through Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital, field, and habitus. It argues that digital participation is shaped by structural and symbolic power relations, not just individual access or skill. Using two-level logistic regression on Eurostat data, the study shows how different forms of capital--digital skills, education, and device use--interact with national contexts. Findings reveal that in more innovative countries, manual workers participate more, while in less innovative ones, cultural misalignment leads to exclusion. The study reframes digital inequality as a field-dependent form of social stratification.
