McQuillan, Jeff; Rodrigo, Victoria – Foreign Language Annals, 1995
Discusses the phenomenon of involuntary mental rehearsal of language as an indicator of second language (L2) acquisition among acquirers. This study provides evidence for an L2 "Din in the head" after reading from a survey of two classes of intermediate Spanish students: a reading-only group and a reading-and-conversation group. Lin, Xia – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1995
Describes an experiment that was designed to compare three different map displays used as a visual display for information retrieval by either a self-organizing algorithm or human subjects. Results indicate that the organization and visual appearance of map displays had a significant effect on subjects' searching and browsing on the map displays.…

Goernert, Phillip N. – Educational Research Quarterly, 1995
An innovative classroom exercise that relieves anxiety related to psychological statistics courses and is relevant to the real world was tested with 26 psychology students. The use of real-world data based on a taste-test television commercial helps students understand the practical applications of statistics. (SLD)

Hong, EunSook; O'Neil, Harold F., Jr. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1992
A mental model analysis was conducted with 27 graduate and 29 undergraduate students in the statistical hypothesis testing domain to determine the nature of relevant mental models that can be taught to novices. Results suggest the efficacy of using separate and diagrammatic strategies in teaching novices introductory hypothesis testing. (SLD)

Russell, Craig J.; And Others – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1991
Analysis of hypothetical data with dependent responses demonstrates how information loss caused by the overt response scale has an unknown influence on effect sizes in moderated regression analysis. The number of scale steps measuring the dependent variable results in a form of systematic error that alters interaction effect sizes. (SLD)

McKenzie, Craig R. M. – Cognitive Psychology, 1994
Through Monte Carlo simulation, respective normative and intuitive strategies for covariation assessment and Bayesian inference are compared. Results indicate that better performance in both tasks results from considering alternative hypotheses, although not necessarily using a normative strategy. Conditions under which intuitive strategies may be…

Eidgahy, Saeid Y. – TechTrends, 1991
This second in a series of articles on the effectiveness of educational technologies in higher education focuses on a study of four-year higher education institutions in Ohio. This study investigated differences between the media directors' perceptions of the importance of educational technology services and their budget commitment to those…

Ward, Shawn L.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1990
How the organization of knowledge influences scientific reasoning was studied as 132 college students completed a selection task with familiar or unfamiliar semantic content and interclause relationships expressing or not expressing entailment. Results support a constructivist view of reasoning emphasizing the importance of organization of…

Chinn, Clark A.; Brewer, William F. – Review of Educational Research, 1993
Ways in which scientists and science students respond to anomalous data are analyzed. There are seven distinct ways in which they respond, only one of which is to accept the data and change theories. Factors that influence theory change and implications for science instruction are reviewed. (SLD)

Cates, Ward Mitchell; McNaull, Patricia A. – Journal of Research on Computing in Education, 1993
Discussion of teachers' uses of microcomputers in the classroom and the influence of preservice and inservice training focuses on a study of teachers of seventh- and eighth-grade learning-disabled students that examined the amount and type of training they had completed, their attitudes toward microcomputers, and their reported use of…

Hunter, John Mark; And Others – Journal of Visual Literacy, 1991
Describes a study that was designed to explore the effects of two teaching presentations (parsed and whole cartoons) and cognitive style (field dependent and field independent) on undergraduate students' ability to understand editorial cartoons. Use of the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) is discussed, and hypotheses tested are explained. (32…

Bell, Michael; Totten, Herman L. – Library Quarterly, 1991
Describes a study of 39 Texas public elementary schools that investigated the effect of school climate and teacher characteristics on the cooperation between teachers and school library media specialists. The involvement of school librarians in instruction is discussed, and suggestions are offered for increasing their involvement. (33 references)…

Thomas, Hoben; Kail, Robert – Intelligence, 1991
Mental-rotation task response times from 12 studies involving 505 adults--251 males and 254 females--were used to evaluate 5 hypotheses concerning sex differences derived from an X-linked genetic model. The model assumes that task facilitation in speed of mental rotation is mediated by a recessive gene. Four hypotheses derived from the model were…

Mondschein, Lawrence G. – Journal of Documentation, 1990
Discussion of the use of selective dissemination of information (SDI) focuses on a study that proposed a model for evaluating the relationship between SDI and the number of publications authored by basic research scientists working in a corporate research and development (R&D) environment. Hypotheses and their findings are presented. (Seven…

Fletcher, James M. – ACEHI Journal, 1991
This study, involving 59 disabled and nondisabled adolescent readers, tested A. Kennedy's "spatial map" hypothesis wherein spatial sequencing ability is important in lexical reaccess under high-demand text situations alone. Tests of the variance contributions of a spatial sequencing covariate to eye movement dependent measures of reading, across…
