Snyder (1974) is evaluated by comparing several measurement models suggested by previous factor analysis of the scale using sample data from 1,113 college students. Two joint maximum likelihood estimation methods (LOGIST 2B and LOGIST 5) and two marginal maximum likelihood estimation methods (BILOG and ForScore) were contrasted by measuring the difference between a simulation model and a model obtained by applying an estimation method to simulation data. Based on the usual factor analysis model, this paper investigates the relationship between improper solutions and the number of factors. The properties of the noniterative estimation method of M. Using Monte Carlo methods, the applicability of large sample theory to maximum likelihood estimates of total indirect effects in sample sizes of 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 was studied. A method of automatically selecting items for inclusion in a test with constraints on item content and statistical properties was applied to real data. Tests constructed manually from the same data and constraints were compared to tests constructed automatically. Results show areas in which automated assembly can improve test construction. (SLD)

A new computerized mastery test is described that builds on the Lewis and Sheehan procedure (sequential testlets) (1990), but uses fuzzy set decision theory to determine stopping rules and the Rasch model to calibrate items and estimate abilities.
