Beutler, Rosetta – 1972
A method of reading instruction is discussed in this paper. By helping the child to develop mental pictures of what he reads he can better retain the meaning of the sentence as he deciphers the more difficult words. The non-reader can lose the essence of a sentence because he may become too involved in decoding the sentence. A procedure on how to…

Hale, Gordon A.; Taweel, Suzanne S. – 1972
A component selection measure developed by Hale and Morgan (1971) was used to determine children's tendency to exercise selective attention. This tendency was assessed at six different levels of training, ranging from undertraining to overtraining, and was examined at each of three ages--4 (N=116), 8 (N=216), and 12 (N=104). In the learning phase,…

LYNCH, DANIEL O. – 1966
THE EFFECTS OF INSTRUCTIONS, TYPE OF LABEL, TYPE OF CONCEPT, AND SEQUENCE OF CONCEPTS BY TYPE UPON CONCEPT IDENTIFICATION WERE INVESTIGATED IN THIS STUDY. PERFORMANCE WAS ANALYZED IN TERMS OF FOUR TYPES OF TEST ITEMS. INSTRUCTION, FOCUSING ON THE CONCEPT TO BE ATTAINED AND THE CONCEPT NATURE, WAS FOUND TO FACILITATE CONCEPT IDENTIFICATION…

Bruning, Roger H.; And Others – 1977
In two experiments, visual and auditory memory were tested for good and for poor readers from the upper elementary grades. Under experimenter-blind conditions, no reading group differences existed for single-mode presentation in recognition frequency or recognition latency. With a multimodal presentation, latencies for poor readers were similar to…

Peer reviewedSwanson, Lee – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
No difference was found in recall of nonverbal stimuli between normal and learning disabled readers, suggesting that primary reading deficits in learning disabled children are related to verbal encoding deficiencies (visual-verbal integration) and not to deficiencies of visual memory, as suggested by the perceptual deficit hypothesis. (Author/GDC)

Peer reviewedHill, A. Lewis; Siverman, Wayne P. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1978
Visual perseveration was investigated within educable mentally retarded and second, fifth, and eighth grade normal children (N = 12 each group). (Author)

Peer reviewedDonovan, G.; Mitchell, M. M. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1978
Twenty-eight kindergarten children (5-6 years old) were tested in order to identify children with learning disabilities and to compare tests results. (Author)

Peer reviewedPreston, Mike – Mathematics in School, 1978
A number of linguistic problems identified through analysis of primary mathematics texts are discussed. These include vocabulary, readability and perception. (MP)

Peer reviewedBruder, Gail A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1978
Three experiments assessed the effect of visual familiarity of words on "same-different" reaction times (RTs) in a simultaneous-matching task. All three studies showed visual familiarity to be responsible for differences in slope over sequence length between words and nonwords. (Editor/RK)

Peer reviewedFahrmeier, Edward D. – Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 1978
Early acquisition of right and left as absolute concepts does not seem to be related to early mastery of right and left as relative concepts among the Hausa. (Author)

Peer reviewedLedlow, Alexa; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1978
The physical identity reaction time task used in this study was designed to further test the effect of processing mode uncertainty on visual field asymmetries that Swanson et al. (1974) reported, and to determine the effects of location uncertainty in a cognitive task. (Author/KC)
